Another Big One from the K’ya Regime
The House of Big Fish and Ice Cold Beer continues as the hottest news on today’s dine-our scene wit the winner, once again, the dynamic duo who introduced the small plates trend that immediately captivated other hip restaurateurs some time ago. Yes, K’ya Bistro principal Chris Keller and his inventive executive chef Craig Cannole built a bustling new venue that gives knowing locals another fascinating retreat for sipping and supping. So, here is an update for those who have yet to know the scoop! The savvy pair converted long-time Aegean Greek restaurant atop The Collection in downtown Laguna Beach into a mecca for delectable taste sensations. However, these dishes are generously portioned, but at prices we would expect to pay for small plates, Moreover, everything is happily complemented with amenable ambiance, an enticing ocean view and a noise level commensurate with serious chowing down.. Join the busy bar crowd, settle at the spacious dining room or enveloping veranda where polished wood tables are decked with racks of assorted condiments, a stack of faux fabric napkins and intriguing paper menus revealing the culinary imagination that provoked such a phenomenal caliber of choices. Most are incredibly tabbed at $2 to $14; oysters Rockefeller, $10 for ˝ dozen bivalves, the same for wine/cheese lavished lobster fondue, this a festive sharing experience with crisp toast cubes for dipping. And when did you last enjoy a chilled shrimp cocktail for $6? Hawaiian pokes are sized at $4 and $9, the latter more than enough for two appetites as in the tender melt-on-your-tongue ahi chunks which arrived in a huge platter appetizingly framed with crackling fried wontons. A bonanza, too, is the selection of generously portioned wild and farmed seafood entrees for $11 to $14 offering a choice of preparations—blackened, grilled, Cajun spiced & teriyaki. Sauce selections include basil-garlic, lime-cilantro, garlic butter and lemon-caper butter with choice of beautifully assorted fresh veggies, coleslaw, Cajun rice or potatoes, add $2 for chowder or salad. Among seven provocative “Lures” at all of $5, is the pinnacle of culinary treats, half a dozen perfectly al dente giant shrimp luxuriously tossed scampi style with luscious linguine. A winner indeed! If denizens of the briny not be your wish, however, peruse the quintet of beef, pork and chicken entrees at $8 to $15, each served grilled or blackened with the same tasty aforementioned options. In the mood for spicy Baja dishes, take your pick at $3 to $9; the plump cheese quesadilla with sour cream & salsa says it well. The innovative K’ya guys have also tantalized sweet tooth penchants with teensy tabs for irresistible ice cream concoctions. Would you believe $2 to $4 for a vanilla or chocolate brownie sundae, Or, for a deuce more, try the strangely flavorsome “adults only” raspberry beer float submerging yummy chocolate gelato. No wonder this innovative fish & beer bonanza has been wowing the entire town since Day One. The restaurant is at 540 So. Coast Hwy. Laguna Beach. Phone 949 715-4500.
