The Beach House:

  with Glori Fickling

Where Dining Success Abounds-

Perusing some of my old restaurant columns dating back to the late eighties, I was, once again, rather astounded at the dearth of so many places which did not make the grade.  High on the small group of successes, however, shines The Beach House perched atop the Pacific on Sleepy Hollow Lane which is about to  celebrate 42 successful years.  Chalk up a triple winner for restaurateur Gale Pike who trumped this coup with another in 1993 at Cardiff by the Sea. Although doors closed New Year’s Day on the beautiful Beach House at Dana Point Island, this happened only after a rousing ten profitable years.  And, yes, let us not forget the delightful Beach House on the sand in Palm Springs, a charmer captivating a happy turnout for several years before folding to make way for the 1999 Dana Point locale.

Reporting on Laguna Beach, however, this one-time home of vintage actor/comedian Slim Summerville, which the Pike’s converted so handsomely, has continually kept in step with the times, currently attracting guests with affordable prices too good to miss.  Breakfast tabs have been lowered, for example, from $8.95 for such as traditional eggs Benedict to @11.95 for filet mignon and crab cakes Benedict, all entrees prefaced with chilled melon and freshly baked pastries.

Now executive chef Michael Ingino, who came aboard some 18 months ago, has launched this new  year with a series of 3-course dinners for $30 available every day from 4:30 to closing.  These tempting bargains are over and beyond early dinner specials The Beach House inaugurated decades ago which continue 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. daily.  Opting to check out the triple course dinners, I cozied up with a dear friend on a stormy winter night, at an oceanfront table warming my frosty limbs over a martini while perusing the delicious array of choices.  And, oh, what a gourmet selections await

We set our dinner pace with Hawaiian ahi sashimi atop crisp wontons seasoned with citrus soy and the bite of wasabi aioli, sharing the delectables with BBQ shrimp skewers wrapped in crisp bacon and a contrast of bleu cheese coleslaw.  Cioppino topped linguini, day boat sea scallops, exotic mushroom topped N.Y. steak, all listed?  OK, rich, creamy lobster thermidor, an exotic 50’s standard from the old Mike Lyman’s in downtown L.A.  This one comes scrumptiously tossed with Maine lobster chunks, mushrooms, truffle oil and béchamel sauce.  Not to be outdone, my buddy raves over his tender filet mignon crowned with fried onions, sides of grilled asparagus, a roast red potato.  Chef Michael’s N.Y. cheesecake features a mixed berry compote garnering equal accolades, as did the enormous plateful of luscious tiramisu flourished with a crisp lady finger

 CEDAR CREEK INN
Culinary Bargains Abound!
 with Glori Fickling

The current refurbishing of this handsomely
capacious restaurant, among a trio
of interesting venues by the Ayers‘ family,
has set the pace for an equally challenging
menu restoration. Lone diners as well as
families, couples and groups, are warmly
welcomed with a plethora of comfortable
booths which have replaced many free
standing tables in the central dining area,
all set against a warm background of rusty
orange walls punctuated with intricately
patterned stonework accents echoing a
comforting fireplace on the spacious patio.
Deliciously augmenting this enticing ambiance
is an extensive list of tempting culinary
and cocktail bargains geared to challenge
our current economy.

Happy hour, for instance, is an extended
happening every day, 3:30 to 7 p.m. in
the sprawling cocktail lounge where high
and low seating indulges guests with $4
well drinks, $5 martinis, ½ price wine stems,
draft beers and taste treats from the bar
menu. Nightly bargains include trio of
hefty entrees and hearty cocktails at
$10 each which are available nightly.
Thursdays beckon to Asian Cedar Wok
temptations, a 3-course native feast
at $20. Saturday date night garners
romantic dinners at $79 per couple.
And what can beat Sunday when prime rib with
all the trimmings are $20 including soup
or salad. Or, perhaps, the Sunday brunch,
11:30 to 3 p.m. starting with $5 bloody
mary's and refreshing mimosas plus main
dishes at a mere $10 to $14.

Savoring dinner at Cedar Creek Inn on a
recent Wednesday, following the complimentary
basket of bread which provokes an extra
charge at some restaurants these days, a
grilled artichoke split lengthwise and ahi
tartare proved light enough appetizers
preceding any of the sizeable entrées.
Consider a succulently thick grilled pork
chop accented with grilled pears and sided
with a huge mound of cheese lavished scalloped
potatoes, cut green beans, tomato & corn kernels.
A big surprise was the unexpected Caesar salad
punctuated with slivers of flavorful Parmigiano.
Noting that Susan B Komen gets a percentage of
profits from Ultimat vodka, made that my
obvious choice for a very dry classic martini.
Desserts are decidedly a creative strong point
here, a modest $8 for such as the lascivious
fresh peach and strawberry lushes alternating
layers of whipped cream cheese with sensuously
gelatinous fresh fruit atop a buttery walnut
crust, rich and generous enough to appease two
foody appetites.

Pomodoro Offers Price Pleasing Italiano Tastes

When owner/chef  Andriano Paganini launched his intimate little Pomodoro ristorante on Forest Avenue a few years ago, it was my distinct pleasure to enjoy sharing dinner with the handsome young Italian founder. While relishing a variety of appetizers and entrees, it became clear that his Milano inspired family recipes and invitingly modest prices were the perfect call for a place on this busy street famed for diversified restaurants and art galleries. Thus, it was no surprise when his creation became an immediate success in a location where several predessors had failed in rapid succession. As merely the third Orange County venture in what originated in San Francisco circa 1994, Pomodoro has since become a very successful chain of Italian bargain bistros.

On a recent Sunday, when adjacent restaurants were closing at 9:45 p.m., our hungry quartet was happily indulged at Pomodoro commencing with a good bottle of merlot, complimentary slices of sourdough baguette and tasty complement of olive oil/pesto. Then, though not on the menu, requests for cioppino were quickly expedited, two lavish bounties of flavorfully-brothed bivalves, crustaceans and fin fish for a bargain $16.95.  Then, a hearty heap of capellini pomodoro wafted with garlic and basil at $7.95;  and penne tubes topping eggplant bites in a spicey tomato sauce with mozzarella for $9.50. The budget-pleasing prices encompass savory selections in small and large portions and varied sides, all making this a top spot for family dining where a terrific variety of antipasti, insalati, pizzas, paninis, specialitas and tradizionales are deliciously on tap for sharing.

Pomodoro's basic menu is augmented every eight weeks. Current weekday specials include 30% discounts on minimum $30 To Go orders Mondays; Kids free chow Tuesdays; and, a whopping 50% off bottled wines Thursdays.  Let's Go!

The Royal Hawaiian an Expanded Laguna Tradition

Following a massive 2 year, top to bottom makeover, Laguna's long popular Royal Hawaiian has conquered the sundry early critiques of locals to become one of the city's most busy night spots. Enter past the sleek main dining room to discover this vintage, circa 1947 restaurant now boasts an elongated tropical bar which stretches into a spacious cocktail lounge facing bustling Coast Highway with local bands attracting a hip young late night crowd.

Happily not changed are the exotic Mai Tai and Lapu potables as well as most of the original menu created by late owner, Francis Cabang. Charcoal broiled chicken, steaks, chops and lobster, reasonably priced in the traditional standard of this tiki-inspired venue. In addition, though the relish tray opener and flaming pele dessert are a distant memory, entrees are still prefaced with the traditional French onion soup and ono ono salad.

Add to all this, as encountered on my recent foray, a Specials menu provided a tasty surprise. Here come such as pulled pork and cheese burger sliders, baby spinach and hearts of romaine salads for about $8 to $10. Most impressive, however, are the ahi and mahi dinners, 8 ounces of perfect, rare fish, each sided with a huge russet baked potato and hefty clump of fresh broccoli, all for an amazing $18 including an unexpected preface of the standard soup and salad. How busy is the place, you ask?  That hospitable g.m. Bob Phillips is launching an upstairs dining area to handle overflow and private parties should answer that query. Oh, yes, about the entertainment. Those live bands and lively rhythms inspire impromptu dance gyrations Thursday, Friday, Saturday nights. And Reggae sets a deliciously frantic pace Sunday afternoons.

Blue Laguna Restaurant & Lounge

Blue Laguna Restaurant Lounge Is Totally Alive - with Glori Ficking

Ever since once trendy Hotel San Maarten Laguna Beach was taken over by the Holiday Inn, circa 1980’s, locals have been looking for a restaurant to equal the late Gauguin’s, a hands-down favorite with locals and in-the-know tourists. Following a long string of unsavory fiascos, I like to think the current Blue Laguna is filling the Gauguin void. On the brink of a first anniversary, this handsome restaurant/lounge is gradually exuding many of the popular predecessor’s merits and with purse-pleasing prices to boot.

For openers, owner/manager Wilton Briscoe resides on propertyewhich seemingly assures consistent hospitality as he  supervises all dining areas: the sunny alfresco front deck, spaciously breezy back patio and sophisticated dual interior settings.  Additionally, this astute young operator is totally into all things contemporary. Most recently he introduced an affordable Sunday champagne brunch offering a tempting selection of entrees complemented with bottomless flutes of bubbly for a tender $20 tab.  Briscoe also immediately caught on to the hip tapas trend, made entertainment a nightly attraction, instigated 120 minutes of weekday happy hour enticement then, topping all, he continually feeds the late night crowd into a 2 am closing time.

Commencing with a 7 am to noon breakfast menu, the main bill of fare is available from 11 am to 10 pm augmented with dinner entrees starting at 4 pm. This translates to small and large size soups and salads at $4 to $8; sandwiches and burgers $9 to $12. Except for the 8 oz. filet mignon at $34, entrees are $l6 to $26, the latter for 6 oz. blackened ahi steak with seasonal veggies and garlic mashed potatoes. However, $12 will get you an 8 oz. ahi steak on a sesame seed bun with lettuce, tomato and onion. Sides, such as mac & cheese, sautéed spinach and seasonal veggies, are all of $4 each, and five desserts are a tasty $4 to $7. The tapas menu is presented much like sushi listings with 15 taste treats to mark for ordering  and features such as twin tacos packed with carnitas, chicken or carne asada for $6...an 8” cheese pizza, $9...pan fried crab cakes, $10...parmesan crusted artichoke hearts, $12.  The nightly music menu is dancingly varied and there is occasional entertainment on Sunday afternoons.

Ristorante Rumari

Savor this 18 year Italian Haven with Glori Fickling

Beyond the extensive marble top bar which curves gracefully inside the front door, little has changed at this inviting Italian trattoria since the Crivello family launched Rumari some 18 years ago. With chef Vince manning the kitchen accompanied by Papa Antonio and brother Massimo, Mama Bina's authentic recipes have remained the inevitable star. The same little patio for alfresco seating fronts Coast Hwy traffic, double dining areas await for leisurely supping and sipping as late as 10:30 p.m weekends, and unwavering service keeps a loyal following coming.

The current economy crisis seems not to have deterred things here as the somewhat pricey menu, at least for the seafood, beef and veal arrangements, has remained constant in spite of drastically reduced tariffs many local establishments are promoting these days. Understandable, however, considering the high quality of cuisine and generosity of portions. With an insatiable appetite for pasta, I requested my favorite, vermicelli, delicate angel hair strands offered with garlic, olive oil, basil, fresh and sundried tomatoes. Mentioning a desire for pesto sauce, a heaping bowl of the savory topping was hastened to the table resulting in a gargantuan main course which could, for $15.50, easily have satisfied two appetites.

Wavering between a trio of linguine presentations and lasagna della nona, my equally pasta-minded companion settled on linguine salsiccia, realizing the latter would require 1/2 hour baking time because microwaves are forbidden in the immaculate kitchen. This hearty dish at $16.95, arrived lavished in a rich chunky tomato, pecorino cheese sauce punctuated with sausage, roasted peppers and onions. After an antipasto misto starter of sliced meats, cheeses and veggies ($15.95) he, too, received carry-out leftovers. Beyond 20-some assorted ala carte entrees, most in a $26 to $40-plus range, Rumari offers such recent nightly quotes as individual preparations of swordfish, ahi and seabass entrees plus shrimp ravioli for $24.95.  Mama Bina's freshly made cannoli, tiramisu and gelato creations constitute affordably delectable finales.

                         The Melting Pot

 Fascinating Feasting with Glori Fickling

Food Platters

It is called “The Big Night Out” and big, indeed, is this fabulous 4-course feast of delectable's prepared atop your table from a steaming cauldron. Foodies recalling the trendy cheese fondue parties of the fifties will easily relate to The Melting Pot, a fascinating restaurant celebrating a "lucky seven" anniversary in Irvine on July 22nd. The inviting creation of enterprising mother/daughter duo, Mira Selbo and Dana Robertson, comprises an intriguing maze of dimly lighted booths with larger areas for sizeable parties. Each space exudes a warm, romantic aura making for leisurely dining at its most delicious.

Selecting the Fondue Fusion, my ravenous trio was totally captivated as our dedicated server, Anthony, dramatically swirled the first course, spinach/artichoke cheese fondue lavished in a rich, scalding broth. With piercing spears at the ready we hungrily harpooned assorted bites of bread, veggies and apples. Following, among a quartet of selections, came fresh spinach/mushroom salad sided with burgundy/shallot vinaigrette. There are four cooking styles from which to prepare entrees and we unanimously settled on coq au vin, a flavorful melding of mushrooms/garlic/herbs and wine, aromatically enhancing our succulent arrangement of lobster, shrimp, filet mignon, chicken and sacchetti, little filled pasta hobo bags.

Fruit and Chocolate Platter

But what feast is complete sans dessert, and tantalizing tiramisu was a tough decision among such decadent chocolate offerings as bananas Foster, s’mores and cookies ‘n cream.

Dining options are temptingly varied with such promotionally priced choices as the current Fourth of July Family Weekend. Purchase a Fondue Feast for two and receive each additional feast for $33. Equally enticing this month is the 7-anniversary, 7-day celebration, 7/19 to 7/26, when $7 will be deducted from any 4-course menu combination. So, go raise a toast! This is a veritable Lucky 7 winning ticket from the get go.

ANDREA

Splendiferous dining defines The Resort at Pelican Hill

When it comes to sumptuous dining, The Resort at Pelican Hill has clearly defined the concept in its luxuriously appointed Andrea restaurant.  A breathtaking vista of the sprawling grounds awaits from every table, replete with majestically sculpted golf greens, a grandiose oval pool with a celestial background of the blue Pacific. Cushy curved banquettes in soothing beige tones plus Romanesque furnishings and paintings deliciously detail the majestically capacious dining room with enough space to make individual settings intimately private. All this wonderment complements the expansive Northern Italian menu enhanced with impeccably attentive service. And such knowledgeable waiters as devoted Jeremy who describes every query to the proverbial T, really know their stuff.

Upon seating, an oversize linen napkin is unfurled, setting the pace for a memorable repast starting with a basket of assorted breads posed beside a cluster of fresh white roses. The extensive bill of fare, presented with crisp, parmigiana infused breadsticks, is augmented with a seasonal menu, currently showcasing the tantalizing cuisine of Liguria. This is a provocative 3-course repast of superlative regional cuisine offering a trio of selections in each category. Surprisingly, for all this grandeur, the tariff is an reasonable $75, with vintage wine pairings bringing the total to $100.

Executive chef Gianluca Re Fraschini, a native of Italy’s Lake Garda, has made some of these seasonal dishes available a la carte, as in the roasted veal cutlet, an amazingly thick boneless chop, at $32, sided with sliced porcini mushrooms and wild asparagus. Pastas in every style imaginable, are created in the restaurant’s extraordinary pasta room, one of Andrea’s three extraordinary adjoining kitchens.. I personally savored the trenetta con pesto, slender strands punctuated with green beans, mushroom bits and potato cubes. My melanzana appetizer was like no other, piping hot eggplant steaming in an iron skillet atop a gleaming silver tray with a side of pomodoro. Among tableside show stoppers came seasoned risotto, al dente rice incorporating zesty parmigiana as it was tossed on an enormous wheel of the flavorful cheese.

Complimentary amenities make Andrea an additionally splendid value. Delicate amuse bouche, on this occasion, became a generous little crystal square of delectable shredded crab. There is a palate cleansing mid-dinner sorbet presented with specified repasts. And, as a grand finale, a twiggy tree arrives, preciously adorned with assorted chocolates, irresistible even following the most delectable tira misu of my decades long reviewing career--richly creamy, mildly sweetened and elegantly embellished with a sensual scoop of mocha gelato.

Sundried Tomato A Revelation with Glori Fickling

Prominent Orange County restaurateur, Rob Quest, launched his third Sundried Tomato last month in San Clemente’s brand new Talega Village shopping center,.  The impressively spacious site is sumptuously surrounded with a wide alfresco deck overlooking verdant putting greens and a teasing glimpse of the Pacific. Called "American Bistro & Cafés” the sophisticated attraction sports a handsome interior of dark polished woods and granite beneath a black open-beam ceiling. Tables beyond the entry are flanked by a viewable kitchen and an elongated bar that curves into cozy sunken seating with TV at the far end, all fronting a relaxed rear dining area.

The place was surprisingly busy on a Monday evening, clear indication that innovative chef Jeff Platt, who gained prominence at award-winning Tabu Grill in Laguna Beach, is here, again challenging his considerable creativity.  Gracious G.M. Nick Papadatos, whom patrons will remember from Quest’s 16 year Laguna Beach success, brought forth tempting appetizers of duck confit truffled crostinis in edamame puree; goat cheese stuffed squash blossom tempura; and braised oxtail & portabello crostinis dotted with goat cheese.  Attentive server, Mary, sanctioned my personal choice of Platt’s New Zealand green lip mussels braised to plump perfection in a surprisingly rich, creamy bisque scattered with chewy bits of pancetta, all of which my guest and I enjoyed with accompanying baguette slices and sundried tomato butter and seasonings presented in tiny ceramic squares.

Entrees take the high road with flavorful roasted pork tenderloin, thickly sliced atop a broccolini bouquet.  Accolades, too, for a colossal Atlantic salmon steak accompanied with sautéed spinach, crimini mushrooms and tomato fondue. In addition to a dozen other main courses, a trio of nightly quotes--meat, poultry, seafood--nicely complements dinner selections. There is also a comprehensive bar menu to whet your appetite while indulging in frosty brews, vintage wines and potent cocktails, not least the ingenious variety of icy martinis poured exclusively with Sobieski Polish vodka.  To sweeten all this bounty, bargain indulgences await in the lounge for 5 refreshing happy hours every day, 2 to 7 p.m.

NICK’S LAGUNA BEACH WINS  with Glori Fickling

Following a quietly unobtrusive opening last August, Nick’s Laguna Beach is doing very nicely a brief 9 months later. Opting for an early solo dinner at the restaurant’s central cocktail bar which is flanked by comfortable booths and tables, I was able to observe some of the obviously devoted clientele. An adjacent couple from Palm Desert, for instance, mentioned that while they usually vacation at Crystal Cove, they always dine at Nick’s because they enjoy the consistently tasty and reasonably priced dishes. Relishing a plump fire roasted artichoke followed by twin fish tacos stuffed with slaw and mango salsa, the wife called her combination a “perfect meal” for only $14.

Two Laguna Beach locals similarly admitted to visiting Nick’s often, “because we can easily afford it”, said the woman, pointing to her hearty bowl of chicken noodle soup and house salad of mixed greens with crumbled egg, bacon, red onion and croutons, a total of $8. Her husband’s plump burger at $9 was termed another bargain, roasted seasonal vegetables his healthy alternative to warm potato salad or rustic potato chips. Menu tabs, in fact, range from $4 to $18 except for the $25 center cut filet mignon served with "loaded baked potato" & veggies.  Add to this, the house salad with any entrée is all of $3.  Sipping my round-bottom glass of chardonnay, I settled on a grilled ribeye salad, the recommended favorite of gracious mixologists, Craig & Kalen.  The delicious combination actually translates to a balanced dinner, an entire steak  thickly sliced and grilled to rare perfection surrounding a bountiful mound of bacon vinaigrette drizzled mixed greens atop creamy warm potato salad punctuated with dabs of spicy mustard.

Let’s not overlook, either, Nick’s breakfast menu, another achievement available 8 a.m. until noon daily.  From a tidy $5 for oatmeal brulee with berries and cream, or honey granola with organic vanilla yogurt, to $7 for Belgian waffles with berries, syrup and whipped cream, or $10 for a quintet of omelettes complemented with fresh fruit or hash browns, all promise a temptingly affordable beginning to any day.

ROMEO CUCINA brought to you by Glori Fickling

From tidy sidewalk tables which beckon guests to a sophisticated interior replete with two bountiful cocktail bars, elegantly draped booths, opulent art and a polished hardwood dance floor, a restaurant does not get much more sumptuously Italian than remarkable Romeo Cucina. The popular dining attraction, inspired by brothers Vittorio, Antonio, Vincenzo and dearly departed Ignazio, is merely ten months shy of a two decade anniversary and boasts a menu as affordably priced as it is deliciously diverse and admirably abundant.  Among an octave of antipasti, for example, comes rollini melenzane, four large eggplant slices plumply embracing creamy, garlic-infused feta/ricotta cheeses lavished with zesty tomato sauce, parmegiano and plentiful basil leaves. At $9.95, the delectable starter is easily enough for two hearty appetites.

Among fifteen pasta entrees, $12.95 to $15.95, many of which are vegetarian delicacies, not least is linguine costa verde, flat green noodles tossed with fresh clams and mussels in garlic, white wine and olive oil. From a top of $24.95 for scampi limoncello, half a dozen specialties from the grill also include ossobucco alla romana, the succulent veal shank specialty many places feature only sporadically.  Each of these is sided with a choice of pasta or fresh vegetables.  As for creative pizzas piping hot from the wood-fired brick oven, what could be more innovative than the thin, crisp crusted heap of garlic accented eggplant, sundried tomato, roasted bell pepper, mozzrella and feta cheeses.  A basket of crusty, baked on the premises bread comes upon seating with a little tub of creamy olive teppanade. Thus, when the brothers Romeo say “buon appetitto” they sincerely mean you to enjoy their healthy cuisine with heartfelt love and gusto.
