Border Patrol seize more than 4 tons of drugs

Calexico, CA. – U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers at the cargo facility at the Calexico east port of entry seized more than 8,000 pounds of marijuana found commingled with boxes of plastic articles in a tractor-trailer rig that entered the port at about 7:20 p.m. on Friday, January 23, officials announced today.

The interception comes on the heels of eight other major narcotics seizures that occurred earlier in the week at the downtown port of entry.

CBP officers found 503 wrapped packages of marijuana valued at over $3.5 million hidden within numerous boxes of plastic articles inside the trailer, officials said.

More than 500 packages of marijuana totaling almost 8,000 pounds are found in the back of a tractor trailer.

A CBP officer ordered the tractor-trailer rig to the port’s gamma-ray system for an intensive examination at about 7:25 p.m. after the truck entered the U.S. from Mexico.

An image of the gamma-ray system revealed anomalies in the shipment so it was referred to the dock for off-loading of the merchandise.

Prior to the off-loading, a narcotics detector dog was utilized to screen the shipment and immediately alerted to the shipment. CBP officers subsequently discovered a green leafy substance concealed within boxes that field tested positive for marijuana.

The driver, a 38-year-old Mexican male and resident of Tijuana, was arrested for the alleged narcotic smuggling attempt. The tractor-trailer and narcotics were seized by CBP.

The additional cargo load brings the total to nine major narcotics interceptions for this past week, with a total of 9,354 pounds seized and a street value of over $7.2 million.
