Restaurant Dining Reviews
Eva’s Caribbean
Kitchen
By
Peggy and Mickey

Eva's
Curry Prawns
My wife Peggy and I arrived for our reservations
just in time to get a parking spot right in front of Eva's
Caribbean Kitchen. A rare occurrence according to greeter
Don Brun. Who says
that’s our biggest problem unless you’re welling to walk just a
little bit. Don right in front of the place was sitting behind
an islands type table and colorful Caribbean umbrella.
We were ushered in by
Don into a real quaint and interesting atmosphere of an older
house converted into Eva’s place that
emits a cultural vibe, all its own.
This was our first visit and it really did put
you into the mood of the Caribbean. It is true that atmosphere
and service are important for a restaurant review, but the real
test will be the food as it always is in our business.
Our waitress serving us, who's name is Melanie,
told us she has been working at Eva’s for several years and said
she just loves it and actually lives right next door and eats
there herself.
We found the dinner menu extensive and diverse.
It includes Appetizers, salads, entrees and Evamade desserts.
Eva has been open in this same location for over 9 years. Yes,
right here in Laguna Beach and we’ve been in the area for over
40 years and yet we had not eaten here before. In fact we had
not heard of this wonderful place.
Peggy selected
Eva’s
Curry Prawns and
I ordered Eva’s special “Jerk Tenderloin”. The
dining options of the Caribbean at Eva’s Caribbean Kitchen are
indicative of the area's diverse cultures. In fact, Eva’s
Caribbean food mirrors the personality of the region itself. Eva
spends long hours daily preparing her mouth watering delights
and says “it’s a real labor of love for me”.
Eva’s creations are a blend
of ethnic influences and are renditions of real Caribbean food
which quickly becomes a rich reminder of where today's Caribbean
people came from.
Island food brings together
indigenous tastes of the native Arawak and Carib Indians,
European colonial influences, and African flavors introduced by
slaves according to professor Jim Feamia a local expert and
world traveler.
Be sure and bring an
appetite with you because luckily Eva’s Caribbean Kitchen
restaurant see’s fit to load up your plate, and the variety of
menu items - from Spanish to Americana, from Creole to strange
concoctions we had never heard of.
A customer setting with her
husband at the next table told us that they are from the islands
and they were very happy to discover this place because they
were really missing their home foods. She said that Eva’s has
provided them with great traditional Caribbean food. She went on
to say that traditional Caribbean food takes on many things and
peoples. Since its culture is largely an amalgamation of a lot
of diverse factors, Caribbean dining can be a feast of any
number of signature dishes. Indigenous peoples, West African,
French and Spanish cuisine all have their place on the menus
here.
We enjoyed our dishes and we
tasted each others and found them scrumptious and we also
enjoyed the plantain served with my meal.
Nearly every dish is topped
off with a rich blend of spices that traditional Caribbean foods
are famous for. The African dishes began as a byproduct of the
slave trade – the slaves were left to fend for themselves with
the foods their masters left for them, and did their best to
replicate their favorite dishes from home. She said that many
Islanders eat and appreciate Eva’s food”.
Many of Eva’s Caribbean efforts bear the most relation to the
Creole traditions, mixed with the spices of the islands, along
with a multitude of rice dishes that have carried over from
Spanish colonialism. According to Eva some of the most famous
traditional Caribbean foods include callaloo - an African soup
based around crab, beef and chicken – curried goat stew, and a
wide variety of fish cooked to perfection. Another traditional
favorite is the buljol - a salted codfish shredded and season
with a combination of onions, tomatoes, peppers and olive oil.
You'll find the buljol served in a coconut bake. When dining in
the Caribbean, you can't forget the roti - a flour wrap with
curried meat or vegetables”.
Peggy and I have traveled throughout the
Caribbean from Florida
to Venezuela and learned to enjoy
local favorites like conch salad and
fried snapper to haute continental cuisine, our dining
options reflected the fusion of those many cultural influences.
Eva starts everyday with
fresh-from-the-sea ingredients, including grouper and snapper.
Only the finest meats trims her meat extensively draws from the
spices and techniques of the British, Spanish and West Indian
history. And it all comes together in a way that suits the mood
of the place, whether it’s the refined, old-world ambiance or
the elbows-on-the-table feel of the Fish Fry. But wherever and
however you dine, don’t leave without checking out the 206 rums
displayed in the recently hand made cabinet above the busy
kitchen.
For the young and the young of heart who finds
themselves at the Romanic Eva’s watering hole your romance will
be sparked with plenty of island spice, found in everything from
the freshly grated nutmeg floating on a Goombay Smash rum
cocktail to the fiery bits of habanero pepper that might spike
your cool rum mix salad.
This was truly a very memorable dining
experience, from the simplest down-home entrees to the more
upscale dinners enjoyed under a blanket of stars and a wonderful
sea mist.
Eva’s has become famous for some of her old
fermented grape juice list, beers and most of all for her exotic
rum cocktails and rum punch drinks.
We opted for Eva’s own
House specialty!!
The “Knockout Rum Punch”
which
was a nice way to finish off the night.
Rum is a spirit for all seasons--a favorite in
tall, chilled summer drinks and a traditional ingredient of
winter holiday cheer. It is the drink of romantics and
adventurers. It was the pirates' drink: "Yo, ho, ho and a bottle
of rum."
While the simple Rum and
Cola has long been among America's top ten favorite drinks, rums
are also the base for many tropical cocktails, including the
Daiquiri, Zombie, Mai Tai, and Pina Colada. Often mixed with a
potpourri of fruit juices, these drinks are usually
distinguished by exotic garnishes such as orchids. Paper
parasols and plastic monkeys also often decorate these drinks,
which adventurous bartenders sometimes serve in unusual
containers, such as hollowed-out coconut shells.
Rum is made from sugar cane
boiled down to a rich residue called molasses, which is then
fermented and distilled. Light rums are clear to pale gold in
color; dark rums are amber to a rich mahogany in color. Both
light and dark versions are normally 80 proof.
There are also 151-proof rums, which are
excellent in drinks and desserts that call for flaming. In
recent years, a number of specialty rums have been introduced,
flavored with coconut, spices, or fruit. These flavored rums can
give mainstream rum drinks a different twist. Be sure and check
out the Limin’ on the wall.
