The Festival Ballet's ‘The Sleeping Beauty’

Festival Ballet, Southern California’s premier ballet company, will perform’ The Sleeping Beauty’ at Irvine Barclay Theater on Saturday, April 4 at 7 pm and on Sunday, April 5, in a matinee at 2 pm. The two full-length stagings of the classic ballet will feature world-renowned ballet stars dance in lead roles along with Festival Ballet’s professional cast and elite protégé of the San FranciscoBallet. Victoria Luchkina, former Principal Dancer with the Theatre Yuri Grigorovich Ballet in Russia, performs the role of Princess Aurora and Sergey Kheylik, former dancer with the Vienna State Opera Ballet and Cirque du Soleil star performs the lead role of Prince Florimund. Balletomanes may recall that Yuri Grigorovich was director at the Bolshoi Ballet. Festival Ballet’s principal dancer Elizabeth Chasteler, a UCI Graduate and William Gillespie Scholarship award winner, will perform the Lilac Fairy. Bryn Gilbert, in the role of the Enchanted Princess was originally trained at Festival Ballet Company school and was honored in 2008 Los Angeles Music Center Spotlight Award. Stephen Morse, also a Spotlight Award winner in 2008, plays the role of the Bluebird. The dazzlingly costumed ballet cast dances on a stage of newly commissioned sets by artist Sergei Lourov, a recipient at the Center of Architecture and Design’s international competition in Osaka, Japan. The enchanting fairy tale ‘The Sleeping Beauty,’ set to the music of Peter Tchaikovsky has haunted audiences for generations with the fabled dramatic rivalry between the evil fairy, Carabosse and the virtues of fairies representing Serenity, Benevolence, Generosity, Happiness and Temperament. The ethereal Lilac Fairy, representing all that is good and kind, ultimately overcomes Carabosse’s evil spell with the promise that love’s first kiss will awaken the Sleeping Beauty. Festival Ballet Artistic Director Salwa Rizkalla revives this elegantly ethereal Petipa masterpiece with a production that contributes to the memorable history of productions of ‘The Sleeping Beauty’ since it was first performed by the Russian Imperial Ballet in 1890. Kirov trained in the Russian Vagonova method, Salwa Rizkalla, founder of Southland Ballet Academy and Festival Ballet Theater, studied with ballet masters of the Bolshoi and Kirov danced prominent roles in an impressive vitae of performances before devoting herself as director of her own company and dance academy. Her contributions to the artistic community have been repeatedly applauded by The Orange County Music and Arts Administration and by Youth American Grand Prix. Festival Ballet’s ‘The Sleeping Beauty’ is an artistic delight that may be shared with the entire family.
