Call for Artists: Fall 2008, Spring 2009 Artists-in-Residence Programs

Watermill is accepting applications for its Fall 2008 & Spring 2009 Artists-in-residence programs. Watermill, founded by visionary and theater director Robert Wilson, fosters research into the arts of the stage and provides young and emerging artists with a unique environment for creation and exploration in theater and all related art forms. Since 1992, Watermill has operated on a secluded six-acre setting designed by Robert Wilson near Southampton, Long Island. The newly inaugurated building contains ample rehearsal and studio space, dormitories, archive and research library and the Watermill collection of art and design objects from all periods and styles. - Read Indepth Article at http://www.absolutearts.com
 

It may be 180 years since the death of the acclaimed engraver Thomas Bewick (1753-1828), but his influence continues to remain. This influence is particularly apparent in David Stewart’s new exhibition A Natural History opening at the Gone Tomorrow Gallery on Saturday 26 April.There are many parallels that can be drawn between these two artists – both hail from Newcastle upon Tyne, both have created intricate and stunning woodblock prints, and both have drawn upon their intimate knowledge of their surrounds to create vignettes of contemporary life. Pool Gallery in Berlin presents Amy Stein: New American Fables from April 26 – May 24, 2008. 'My photographs serve as modern dioramas of our new natural history.“ In Domesticated Amy Stein explores the paradoxical relationship between man and the natural world: The primal issues of comfort and fear, dependence and determination, submission and dominance refer to our modern every day life.The photographs in this series are constructed based on real stories from American provincial life. By contrast, the setting of Halloween in Harlem is the City: kids are posing in colourful costumes in the streets of New York. The Art of Photography Show, an international exhibition, opened April 25, 2008 with the Opening Reception Gala and Awards Ceremony. This world-class photography exhibit runs April 25 to May 23, 2008 at the elegant Lyceum Theatre Gallery , located in San Diego's historic Gaslamp Quarter. Approximately 20,000 people are expected to view the Show during the four-week run. For this juried competition, more than 12,200 entries were submitted by artists representing 46 countries. This is a 24% increase over the 2007 exhibit. Corey Helford Gallery is proud to present 'Vanity Bonfire', a solo exhibition of new works by artist Sean Christopher. For his first solo show in Los Angeles, Christopher will unveil a world of hidden meanings, symbols, and metaphors through a series of oil paintings, sculptures and mixed mediums. Representing a year and a half long process, 'Vanity Bonfire' juxtaposes heavenly beauty against stark reality, creating a cohesive, multi-layered experience for the viewer. Things are not what they seem as candy coated veneers reveal dark subtle messages upon closer inspection. Christopher's opulent visual vocabulary reaches new heights in 'Vanity Bonfire' as politically motivated soldiers disguised as rococo frosted three layer cakes with lubricated match sticks and peppermint appendages, intermingle with dripping blood cherries, sparkling dollar signs and cultured pearls plucked from a 13th century tiara.
