Greater Laguna Coast Fire Safe Council

Too All, First and foremost, a big round of applause to all of you who took the time and energy to help with the patrols in the last several days.  I know it was not easy to leave the quiet of your homes to go out and literally look for trouble, but you did it and many, many people are grateful for your selfless efforts.  Also thanks to those of you that put your signs and flags on your vehicles.  Enough of you doing so with your daily travels made it clear that someone was watching everywhere, at all times.

If you get a chance please read the article in today's LA Times on page A-21.  I have inserted the most relevant portion below:

""It's inevitable that something like this is going to happen," said Ron Wortman, 51, who has lived in Silverado Canyon since 1981. "We have a committee to drive around when the winds come up to make sure some weirdo doesn't come into our canyon to start something."

A crew of volunteers was set to begin its shift Sunday when the fire broke out.

"By the time we were going to patrol Santiago Canyon, it was too late," said Gene Robinson of Silverado Canyon, the head of Canyon Watch."

Well, folks, with our first patrols out Sunday afternoon at 2:00, we were not too late and I know when the call goes out again, enough of you will respond and we will not be too late then either!

It is so wonderful that we have so many willing to give of their time for the safety of others.  I just cannot tell you how thrilled it makes me feel to be associated with each of you.

They talk about Laguna Beach being lucky this time, but I truly believe that our patrols and the work of the park rangers and the Irvine Ranch Conservancy volunteers helped make our own luck.  We know why there was no fire in our canyon...it didn't stand of chance of getting started without the guilty party being seen and being reported within minutes.

Pat yourself on the back a bit, you deserve it.
