Hopalong Cassidy Rides Again
Hollywood Legacy and Film Celebrity Grace Boyd
to Sign ‘Hopalong Cassidy, An American Legend’
at the Aliso Viejo Public Library on January 30.

A Preface
written by former President Bill Clinton about
the influence of Hopalong Cassidy on his life
reveals the magnitude of the Hopalong Cassidy
legend on the lives of all American kids of the
1950’s who were first to experience TV in the
family home. Bill Clinton describes how Hopalong
Cassidy’s strong sense of justice, protecting
honest ordinary people from the villains who
were taking advantage of them, became the
lodestar of his life and the iconography of the
era.
Songwriter Don McLean of the classic hit ‘Bye,
Bye Miss American Pie, ‘ also reminisces about
Hoppy’s impact on his childhood and the belief
in the American Dream.
 Grace
Bradley Boyd, aka Mrs. Hopalong Cassidy, will
sign her new commemorative book, ‘Hopalong
Cassidy - An American Legend’ on January 30 at 1
pm at the Aliso Viejo Public Library.
In her moving story, Grace traces her life as a
stage and film star before meeting Hoppy, with
the parallel story of Hoppy’s life as a star in
Hollywood before the powerful romance that drew
them together and resulted in a marriage that
produced the famous Hoppy legend, as we know it
today.
Grace Boyd’s dramatic story pivots on a powerful
turning point, their ownership of the literary
rights of the Hopalong Cassidy book series.
After William Boyd had successfully built the
initial character and persona of Hopalong
Cassidy, studio magnets were about to take
control away, when the couple gambled everything
they had to buy the rights to the Hoppy book
series and character, including TV rights at a
time when television was just being invented and
did not yet have a foreseeable future.
After WW II, television s began to enter the
American homes, and by the early 1950’s, TV’s
were proliferating, without much programming.
It was common to turn on the TV with only one or
two stations available and wait for hours with
static until a time when ‘program’ flashed onto
the screen.
When Boyd discovered that with minimal
technicalities a film could be screened on
television, the couple allowed the television
screening of the already completed Hopalong
movie series. Hopalong Cassidy films became the
rage and lead to the production of a TV series
to meet the overwhelming demand.
Grace and Bill began a merchandising campaign
with the Hoppy image on lunch pails and
thermoses, watches, toys, furniture, cowboy
outfits, dolls, bicycles, and other kiddie
paraphernalia marketed in mass to the American
mainstream.
Their amusement park, Hoppyland, was a precursor
to Disneyland and William Boyd appearance riding
with Topper at Rose Parade events and world
tours drew ecstatic and cheering crowds. So
powerful was the love, that when Hoppy visited a
child in a coma in a hospital, at the behest of
the parents, the child miraculously was aroused
to consciousness and came back to life.
The January 30 event gives Southern California
fans and Hollywood history aficionados a chance
to meet Hollywood Legacy Grace Boyd, a Tai Chi
exercise expert who at 96, continues to exudes
the glamour and aura of one of the greatest eras
in Hollywood history.
A screening at 1 pm of a documentary about
Hopalong Cassidy will precede the appearance and
book signing by Grace Boyd in person at the
event. A limited , Collector’s edition version
of 1000, numbered and signed by Grace Boyd is
available will be available le at the event
along with the regular edition of ‘Hopalong
Cassidy – An American Legend.’
