International speakers and world tours
World Affairs Council of Orange County

By Lydia E. Ringwald

World Affairs Council, an international organization with a strategic branch in Orange County, offers a lecture and discussion forum of acclaimed speakers to its members and guests.

Events, a roster of speakers and lecture topics posted on the World Affairs Council Orange County website announce opportunities throughout the year to hear prominent experts discuss the headline political, social and economic issues that concern us today.

At the recent World Affairs Council Orange County dinner lecture event at the Hyatt Regency in Irvine, Middle East analyst Dr. Reza Aslan, author of two publications about Iran and Islam, discussed the political balances in Iran and evaluated issues of negotiation and nuclear détente

In a panel discussing following the lecture Sir Eldon Griffiths evaluated Iran’s position in the current Middle East dilemma and supported the idea of communication and humanitarian solutions to counter the media promotion of Iran as a threat. Dr. Arya Amirie contributed valuable information about Iran’s  rich history and culture as well as facts about its current economic predicament and dependency. Discussion and questions that followed focused on the possibilities of negotiation, communication and détente.

In past years, Orange County’s World Affairs Council has hosted prominent speakers the magnitude of Dr. Hans Blix, Chairman of the Weapons of Mass Destruction Commission, His Royal Highness Prince Radu of Romania, Former President of Mexico Vicente Fox, newscaster Lou Dobbs, Former United Nations Ambassador John Bolton, prominent journalist and news commentator Bill Moyers and Muhammad Mian Soomro, Former Prime Minister and Interim President of Pakistan.

In August, Financial Leaders Raj Date, Chairman of Cambridge Winter Center for Financial Institutions Policy, Sanjiv Sanghvi, President and CEO of Wells Fargo and Marvin Barth, Chief Investment Strategist at Tennenbaum Capital Partners recently presided at the lecture about the banking crises and its effect on the economy.

Upcoming events include a lecture at the Pacific Club by Judge James P. Gray on the topic ‘Drug Prohibition: The Golden Goose Terrorism’ and the annual holiday dinner celebration on
December 14 at the Balboa Bay Club and Resort featuring Richard B. Myers Former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

The World Affairs Council dinner lectures are hosted at prominent hotels in Orange County. A reception at 6pm precedes the dinner and lecture at 7 pm. Members $55, Non-Members $70 and Students $38.

In addition to the stimulating lecture series, World Affairs Council members travel together in tours to China and Southeast Asia or to such exotic and often politically challenged places as Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan.
