KOKOPELLI is known as the fertility God - flute player- shape changer- and is approximately 2000 years old, to this day he is found painted or carved on the walls of ancient Indian dwellings. He was believed to bring prosperity to anyone who listened to his songs..... His flute symbolizes happiness and joy. He would appear after a harsh winter in the new spring and speak to the wind and sky. .......In the millennium when the earth was young, the early people of turtle Island living peacefully in what is now known as the southwest as cliffdwellers perched high atop steep-sided mesas. They trapped rain water and irrigated the valleys below and as farmers, gatherers and hunters they lived in harmony with Mother and walked softly on her back. One day they came under attack by a large unknown force. ( possibly Athabaskins) The attackers soon realized they could not get into the latticed dwellings. They decided to lay siege and to starve the people into surrender. The plight of the people became desperate. Food and water supplies ran low and they prayed to the Great Spirit to save the children. Then from out of no-where appeared Kokopelli, playing his flute and danced right though the invaders before they realized what was happening gathered the children behind him. He led them to the steep edge of the cliffs at the east end of the mesa, facing the morning sun. His flute became silent. As the parents hugged and kissed and said farewell to all the children, Kokopelli shape- changed them into beautiful Monarch butterflies and they flew off to freedom....each spring these beautiful butterflies return to turtle Island from there breeding grounds deep in the safe jungles where the Aztec and Maya people once flourished. The disappearance of the Ancient Ones remains a mystery to this day.
