Introduction

"I give YOU all the seed-bearing plants that are upon the earth, and all the trees with seed bearing fruit; this shall be your food" Genesis 1:29

 

“ The Lord God…said, The man has become one of us, knowing good and evil; what if he now reaches out and takes fruit from the tree of life also, and eats it and lives forever?” Genesis 3:22-24. 

What if man does reach out and take the fruit from the tree of life, will he live forever? If you take Genesis 3:22-24 literally it seems to mean just that, and to expound the significance of a possible double meaning of most interpretations. We have all been told it is a fable, meaning to reach out to God by picking that fruit of knowledge to find the ways of the Lord and we as Christians believe in this Holy Scripture. But could it mean more? That is the question and a part of what this story is all about.

We, believe that fruit from the tree of life may be the lemon. And that trees play a vital roll in human life. As you read this you may want to come and learn with us the blending of the old and the new, and the sharing of the ancient wonders of the tree of life, and of the lemon and lime. We will see how modern medical doctors and ancient medicine together can help us to be healthier and live longer, and how we can best benefit by taking the best from both worlds. We will predict the limitless future of science and technology and how it is, effecting us now and for the years beyond. In fact, many predictions of the future are often nothing more than the narrow viewpoint of the predictor. Predictions are very hard to make with any real accuracy in regards to not only the future, but, how the future will effect us and our way of life and life itself. Since before the agrarian society we as human beings knew very well about pain and suffering that was associated with horrible diseases and many of those diseases are still with us even after the profound transformation of the unleashing of the industrial revolution and still today in the 21st century we fear and suffer from Cancer, heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and other incurable known and unknown diseases. Not so very long ago people on earth lived to be only about thirty and even now our life expectancy is a mere 75 for males and 78 for females. The Bible says that at one time men lived for centuries and that they were vegetarians. Adam fathered a child at the age of 130 and lived a full life and died at the age of 930 years. Noah finished the building of the Ark at the age of 600 years. Much evidence suggests that Noah and his family practiced a vegetarian way of life. He walked with God. He and his family did not partake in the evil ways of the Nephelian Race mentioned in Genesis 6:3-4. This race was formed from the intercession of the fallen angels. Genesis 6:2 states that "The sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and they took them wives of all which they chose. This most likely was the period when the eating of animal flesh became a regular practice. After the flood waters receded and the Ark came to its resting point on Mount Ararat, Noah and his family had no choice but to eat the flesh of animals. Interestingly enough, the life span of human beings went from centuries to 120 years. Meat as a staple food came along some time later. With the advent of refrigeration the amount of meat consumed in industrialized societies increased dramatically as did many previously unknown diseases. By the end of the 20th century a period of intense scientific discoveries like unlocking the secrets of the atom and how to spit it creating the atom bomb, unraveling the molecules of life and building the computer. And remarkable advancements in medicine helped cure deadly and crippling diseases. The dynamic era of science marches on and as such we are on the brink of still another great revolution the hydrogen revolution, which will be, our next main source of energy. Everything from cars, trucks, buses, ships, airplanes, power generating plants and all industrial energy will come from efficient and water and steam producing hydrogen. Dirty fossil fuels will be a thing of the past. This revolution will change the entire economic structure of the world, as we now know it. As human knowledge doubles every ten years, computer power is doubling every eighteen months and the Internet is doubling every year. Perhaps the most important to human health and longevity is the doubling of DNA analyzing, and sequencing every two years. We have now mapped the human genome consisting of about 100,000 human genes that are hidden among 23 pairs of chromosomes in our cells. This was all accomplished years before researchers predicted they would and it was no doubt one of the most ambitious projects in medical history. Francis Collins who headed up that project for the U.S. National Center for Human Genome Research said, “ There is only one Human Genome Project. It will only happen once in human history, and this is that point in time. Without sounding corny, I do believe this is the most important scientific project mankind has ever mounted, this investigation into ourselves." The techniques of molecular biology will allow us to read the genetic code of life as we would read a book. Already, the complete DNA code of several living organisms, such as viruses, single-cell bacteria, and yeast, has been completely decoded, molecule-by-molecule. Embryonic and adult stem cells will heal most of man kind’s illnesses.(go to: www.abcdestemtechhealth.com   Already new advancements in DNA research are making possible a new type of computer, molecular computers, which perform calculations on the atoms themselves, which computes with organic molecules, as a tiny living chip, much smaller than anything today with much more information capability. In fact the size of microchips will be on the scale of a molecule and will end the so-called Age of Silicon. Remarkably, DNA computers have already been built which can solve problems in mathematics faster than supercomputers. Even some visionaries predict a optical computer which will compute on dancing beams of laser light. Already we have computers capable of 3 trillion calculations per second (3 terraFLOP per second, with 2.5 trillion bytes of memory). Its believed that the US government’s computer secretly known as big Bertha may have been beefed up to calculate even more. In comparison it is understood that the human brain our in-house computer, that we all have, routinely calculates at 10 terraFLOP speeds per second or faster, which science believes will be surpassed any day now by supercomputers that the government may already process. 

Robots will develop common sense and be able to converse with humans and will recognize and manipulate things in their environment as we do, only they'll be able to always learn from their mistakes. This will give them the ability to make independent decisions and perform other complicated duties such as shopping, housekeeping, cooking,  provide secretarial services, and assist humans in many other untold ways.  

Many advancements are expected in biotechnology, telecommunications and space travel. Without exception, every one of the technologies singled out to lead the twenty-first century are deeply rooted in the quantum, computer, and DNA revolutions.  Quantum theory revolution discovered in 1925 in the twentieth-century by Werner Heisenbery, Erwin Schrodinger and others were able to reduce matter to some few postulates. So with this new knowledge they were able to mathematically predict properties of substances before they were created. These calculations is now the standard that predicts the properties of everything from microscopic subatomic quarks to the colossal supernovas in the known universe. That then makes it possible for the other two great scientific revolutions, the computer and the biomolecular revolutions. 

Although the laws of computers are well known, only some of the basic laws of artificial intelligence and the human brain are known. At present, computers are our only way to determine if the buildup of carbon dioxide will starve us of oxygen in the atmosphere and will cause us to be bomb barded by the suns radiation. Which can endanger and change human life as we know it. At the very least the computers should tell us if our weather is being disrupted by the greenhouse effect, and if it is as many suspect it is, the economy of the entire planet will be adversely affected.

The quantum theory, too, will have a powerful influence in the next century in the area of badly needed energy production. And will create machines the size of molecules, these machines will become known as nanotechnology micromachines. Nanotechnology promises the very smallest of molecular machines because of the enormous advances in manipulating those atomic-size micromachines, they will be able to scavenge molecules from within our system by patrolling in our bloodstream and removing plaque from our arteries, and will be able to destroy infectious microbes of all kinds. They will be able to kill tumor cells, repair damaged cells and reverse the aging process altogether. They will be able to resolve engineering problems by cleaning up the environment by devouring hazardous wastes, eliminating world hunger by growing wondrously inexpensive but plentiful nutritious well balanced foods. Nanotechnology will enable us to build supercomputers the size of atoms, and build other types of machines, from booster rockets to microchips. These tiny machines will be able to multiply into trillions of molecular robots which will converge on site and destroy viruses and bacteria at will and will be able to solve other biological problems and reshape life as we know it. With the advent of new ways to power rockets through ionic engines  we will see the beginnings of rockets that will reach nearby stars, and we will start developing colonies in deep space, and interplanetary travel will become commonplace.  

All of this will have profound effects on biology and medicine. Most if not all genetic diseases like cancer will be eliminated. Chemotherapy, invasive surgery, and painful testing will all be things of the past. In fact life itself may well become perpetual by conquering death altogether. 

What is helping to drive this quantum leap in biomolecular research is our remarkable ability to decode the secrets of life, using computers and robots to automate the sequencing of DNA. That means someday all organisms will have their complete DNA code unraveled. By then we will be reading the Encyclopedia of all life. It well soon be possible for anyone on earth to have their personal DNA code stored on a CD. Imagine going to your doctor for a routine checkup, he draws some blood without punching the skin, then places it into a computer, which instantly gives a personalized DNA read out including any of the then known genetic diseases. They well even be able to predict the mathematical chances of your getting a disease. Then preventive measures will be taken years before any symptoms appear. Gene and cloning therapy will then cure what ever ails you. Medicine is basically going to change from a treatment-based to a prevention-based discipline.

This shift to polygenic diseases will be the key for overcoming chronic diseases such as heart disease, strokes, diabetes, arthritis, Alzheimer's, aids and other autoimmune diseases, as well as mental diseases like schizophrenia. 

But the bottom line is we know that Ian Wilmut of the Roslin Institute at Edinburgh, Scotland has already cloned Dolly the sheep. Monkeys, mice, pigs, cats and many other animals have also been cloned. That animal cloning will lead to human cloning, if it hasn't already and that alone will give control over the aging process and will extend our life time into the future where human cloning and cloning therapy will be commonplace. Some believe that human cloning has already taken place some where in the world. And that only high net worth individuals and highly placed government officials are privy to this secret science. 

Cloning raises serious moral and ethical questions which we will leave to the clergy, politicians and humanity in general.

We will someday soon be able to grow entire organs in the laboratory such as hearts, livers, lungs, and kidneys for cloning therapies as replacement parts for our diseased or warn out vital organs. And through molecular DNA restructuring we will be able to grow new organs within our own bodies. But until than we must do all we can to stay healthy and try to stick around so we ourselves may one day be able to take full advantage of these wonderful new advancements in our lifetime. Of course if we fell, and if the world is allowed to go on long enough science someday in the distant future may be able to bring us all back from the dead. But I think Christ well most likely do that long before man develops that knowledge.

Chapter I

I first heard of the amazing Lemon/Lime and their wondrous properties when I was very young.

My granddad worked for the Southern Pacific Railroad as a member of the railroads work gangs in the Southwestern United States and some of the gang members that he help get hired were some local Apache and Yaqui Indians, who in turn told us about the Lemon and Limes.

 

The Yaqui's were well known for there amazing ability to go for long periods of time with very little to eat or drink. In fact, they could travel for days and even weeks with out food or water. This was one of the great advantages they seemed to have over there enemies and most likely contributed to the fact they never signed any treaties or concessions with anyone, then or to this day. Which included there so-called superior adversaries the US Calvary and The Mexican army. Who in the 18 and 1900’s pursued them relentlessly. They shared with us (my granddad) some of their secrets. They told him about how they would take Lemons or Limes with them and they would eat the whole fruit and nothing else and that would sustain them completely and they would not get hungry. They claimed they could just add some water from time to time from remotely scattered desert springs along with wild honey combs and an occasional herb tea (sage) and that would in able them to go even longer without any other food of any kind. Yet stay strong, healthy and mentally alert.

 

 

As a young boy I became aware of my grandfather's strong work ethic. I remember him going to work Monday through Friday and often on Saturdays. He would rise well before dawn with my grandmother. They would have their morning glass of Raw apple cider vinegar with some maple syrup or molasses, black coffee, eggs sunny-side up, thick well-done bacon with toast, a wedge of sweet white onion and a hot Chile pepper. The bacon cooked first in the big black iron skillet, then the eggs cooked slowly with the bacon grease splashed over them. One of my fondest memories was the wonderful aroma that would awaken me whenever I stayed overnight with my grandparents. That early morning coffee percolating on the kitchen stove, bacon & eggs frying in the frying pan, and fresh bread in the oven toasting I thought was a great way to start a day. But even to this day, when I am on one of my early morning walks with my wife, and we pass a home with a similar aroma drifting from the kitchen, it reminds me of those wonderful days with my grandparents. I have never felt that I belonged more, was welcomed more, or was more at home than when I visited with my grandparents. Every workday after breakfast Granddad, as I called him, would journey off to the bus stop two blocks away. In 27 dedicated years on the railroad he never missed a day and was late only twice. He worked long hard hours in the hot southwest summer sun and the bone chilling cold, and sometimes snowy, and often windy winters.         

He was an honored member of the railroad’s work gang. The work gangs of those days repaired and built the railroad. Whatever needed to be done, they did it, be it laying the iron track or creosote wooden ties, or driving spikes using a 12 pound sledgehammer, or building wood, steel, or concrete bridges, he did all of this excruciating work with vigor and pride.  My Granddad would tell me, “it’s a good job and I’m glad to have it.”

 

 

We now know we can't eat that way, if we want to lead stronger, longer and much healthier lives. Now is the time for all of us to realize and convince ourselves once and for all that good health is an acquired lifestyle, not just pills, exercise or one of the many diets that permeate the bookshelves in our libraries and bookstores around the globe. DO NOT use vitamins/minerals that are derived from metallic sources, clays, sea beds, etc. Some are toxic and none are absorbed by the body as well as plant derived vitamins and minerals. And watch out for the gelatin capsules many vitamins come in.

As found on my web site at www.MichaelWebster.net you’ll find it says there are dangers in taking vitamin and mineral pills. Nutritional supplements in tablet or pill form have been around for decades. They're standard in today's quest for optimum health. Yet few people realize in order for the pill to take it's shape numerous binders are used. These binders have little to do with nutrition and are very hard for the body to dissolve.

The use of DCP to bind the pill ingredients is the problem. DCP can't be broken down by the body, so it passes right through along with the beneficial nutrients. That's why sewer systems have literally tons of undissolved pills clogging the pipes. But there is even more danger.

 

You should also know that there are raw animal parts sold over-the-counter as "brain tonics" or virility pick-me-ups and could provide an avenue for "mad cow" syndrome to enter the United States.

 

Could food supplements and medications be inadvertent media for the spread of prion based brain diseases? Multiple sources would suggest this is possible, even likely, due to the use of animal gelatins. This probability goes up even more when the medication itself is a glandular extract.

 

Transmissible Spongiform Encephalopathies)(TSI), BSE and others known as "Mad Cow" disease are becoming very important to society and something we should all be aware of! The Nobel Prize has been awarded to Carleton Gajdusek for  his Kuru/TSE research on the subject and to Stanley Prusiner for his TSE/Prion research. Pulitzer prize winning author Richard Rhodes wrote "Deadly Feasts" a controversial expose on the subject, and Oprah Winfrey dedicated a show to BSE/Mad Cow, and was promptly sued by Texas cattlemen, but the Courts upheld her show's 1st Amendment right to Freedom of Speech! The  Current official death toll stands at 81 in England, 2 in France, and perhaps still others may not yet be reported.   Many French towns have ban beef use in school cafeterias, and  France banned sale of beef thyroid glands in November, 2000, and many other countries have followed suit or are banding imports from many European and South American countries as well as England and customs upon entry are much stricter on even humans who have even traveled to those countries. Even more bans are expected around the world, due to both outbreaks of "mad cow" and foot and mouth disease. The Red Cross will not take your blood if you have been to England for an accumulated time of three years or more and five years from many European countries. Mad cow and many related diseases can not be detected by any known blood test so the Red Cross has been putting us all at risk. Health experts say Prions can not be killed by mere cooking or even by boiling. Humans,  Cows, Sheep, Pigs, Mink, and wild animals have all caught and died of TSE'      Over 30,700 web pages mention "mad cow" (AltaVista), and over 9,000 pages use the technical term "Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy".  Web pages on Chaperonins, chemicals possibly preventing the mis-folding of proteins which are the basis for TSE's and Alzheimer's, jumped from 2 to over 6,000 in one year!  

       

Clearly, Transmissible Spongiform Encephalopathies, such as BSE and CJD (one human form,) are a topic of some controversy, one we should all become more aware of. Yet those who profit strive to censor the topic.

There are natural thyroid extracts, such as Armour Thyroid, and synthetics such as Cytomel and Synthroid. The natural ones are taken from the thyroid glands of animals, such as pigs.

Some questions have been raised as to where natural thyroid supplements come from, and how safe they may be with respect to Mad Cow Disease. 

In America and many other countries chicken excrement is fed to cattle as a good source of nitrogen. As for the American FDA's ban on feeding meat and animal by-products to cattle, that's a ban with exclusions big enough to drive a Hearst through. Their own TSE advisory committee urged the FDA to take stronger measures.

Chairman of the British government's Spongiform Encephalopathy Advisory Committee (SEAC), Dean of the University College of London Medical School, believes 500,000 people may already be incubating CJD in Britain. Dr. Alsleben, in his excellent Mad Cow web site, states that prions can be found in white blood cells contaminating milk, and even in the animal grease used in lipstick. Professor Richard Lacey of the Microbiology Department of Chapel Allerton Hospital, points out that "there was no certainty that the source of infection had been cut off."... "'If it seems that the incubation-period average for CJD in humans begins to be about twenty five years, maybe thirty years,' he said grimly, 'then the peak human epidemic will come around the year 2015. If the current numbers of variant CJD cases [the main human TSE,] increases by fifty percent per year compounded, as they well might, that would take it to about two hundred thousand cases a year by then'. Human cases, that is 200,000 deaths per year."

MORE of the Alzheimer's cases in America may be due to CJD and other TSE variants of TSE related deaths?

Several Prion variants have been found, some of which act quickly, some of which act far more slowly, so the 25 year estimate may be considerably off. There is also recent research on chaperonins, biochemicals that assist in folding proteins, which may be related to resistance to prion diseases. (Prion diseases are believed to involve folding of proteins, and what is similar to crystal growth of the mis-folded proteins.) See http://www.mad-cow.org/  and look up chaperonin at http://www.AltaVista.Digital.com  , a site that only had two pages on the web last year, and now has over six thousand!

Will we find a cure in time? Tissue with a twenty five years incubation time is a long time but is it long enough?.... If one ends up with thyroid supplements in one's late thirties, it might be age 65 when some of the more noticeable effects begin to become evident. Those with less resistant genetics may display effects much sooner. Others may die of other dis-eases before the effects of TSE would become clearly visible. And most... may even avoid coming down with the disease.

We must all weigh risks v.s. benefits ourselves. We are not a doctors, we cannot advise you; you have to think for yourself. Like Oprah, we have stopped eating beef; as well as all other animal meats and animal products like gelatin. We dump the contents of all our gelatin capsules into a spoon, and discard the empty capsules. We also avoid all "Farmed" fish like catfish, salmon. Is that enough? I don't know. With luck, we may never find out.


The dietary supplement industry admits that even popular over-the-counter products like melatonin and condroitin sulfate - used to fight jet lag and muscle soreness - could contain animal parts.

A loophole in federal law may be allowing animal parts to be imported as dietary supplements from countries battling "mad cow" outbreaks.

Shipments between countries is making it difficult to determine the exact country of origin of many of the materials sold as dietary supplements or in health food stores. This is a $16 billion industry in the United States alone. Customs records show the United States last year imported 3.3 million pounds of dried animal glands.

Many of what the industry calls "glandular" products are made from ground-up cattle brains, thymus or "orchis," which is Latin for a bull's testicles and sold as products to improve brain power or virility. Some other over-the-counter products including melatonin and condroitin sulfate can contain parts of the trachea (throat) of cattle and still others can contain cattle organs, including brain, spleen, lung, liver, pancreas, pituitary, pineal gland, adrenal glands, lymph node, placenta, prostate, heart, kidney, intestine and thyroid can be found in some of these products.

Many binder compounds remain in your bloodstream long after the pill has been eliminated. And that's where the danger comes in. These remnant molecules can cause plaque to form on the walls of your veins -- leading to heart disease and possible stroke, even death. Not to mention pre-mature aging, painful joints, and kidney stones.

All this time you thought you were improving your health by taking your daily dosage of vitamin pills -- but reality says you could be causing yourself serious harm.

Next, because of these binder agents, 90% of the nutrients you were trying to get are passed through the body unabsorbed. That means 90 cents out of every dollar you spend on vitamin pills is being wasted. Only 10% of the nutrients make it into your system, and here's where the next danger begins.

Vitamins and minerals beneficial effect depends on the right balance of nutrients and in the right proportions. That small 10% that gets absorbed could be rendered useless if it's not balanced with the other necessary vitamins and minerals. Overtaxing of the kidneys can result because vitamin companies use mega-dosages to make up for the inefficiency of the pill and tablet form of nutritional delivery.

Add to this all the confusing advice out there. Misinformation, half-baked recommendations, and a lack of a discipline approach to health management increases the chance of poor results -- even causing the health problems you were trying to avoid.

Another concern is the prevalent use of synthetic nutrients in vitamin pill manufacturing. In order to cut costs vitamin companies try to duplicate nature by making synthetic vitamins. With the help of a chromatogram, a scientific technique for looking at the structure of whole food products vs. their synthetic counterparts, the difference is night and day. Despite mans best effort the synthetic pales in comparison.

A key element in the manufacturing process of synthetic nutrients is the use of heat, and chemical solvents like ether, benzene and toluene. First, heat dramatically reduces the potency of the nutrients and loses their action potential making them unusable by your body's cells.

Next, the chemicals they use are the same ones they use to manufacture insecticides, motor fuels, explosives and lacquers. Just think about that for minute!

Fresh Organic Food

Chapter 2

Whenever possible one should eat fresh organic foods or if not possible take a whole food supplement, rather than a manufactured mineral or vitamin supplement. Plant derived vitamins and minerals are 98 percent absorbable whereas the others absorption rates are less or unknown. You can take all the vitamins in the world, but if you aren't taking minerals along with them, they won't do you much good.

There can be major differences between whole food and vitamin and mineral supplements. Rich and powerful pharmaceutical companies that also provide most all medical drugs and chemicals manufacture vitamin and mineral supplements. Many of these supplements are reported to be synthesized, by using coal tar, petroleum, discarded animal by-products, powdered rocks and shells. Vitamin B-12 comes from ground cattle organs, which can be loaded with steroids, antibiotics, herbicides, and pesticides. Perhaps the most sickening is their use of fecal matter in the form of activated sewage sludge. It is inexpensive to obtain and is loaded with B-12. It is always best however in our opinion to provide the human body with as much variety as possible of whole, uncooked natural organic foods; they retain their living enzymes and their full spectrum of bio-available vitamins, minerals, and trace elements.  

 

Only eat plant foods that are centered around fresh vegetables, fruit, whole grains, beans, nuts, legumes, and all organically grown. Remember all claimed organically grown foods might not be. You really must know first about the soil the plants are being grown in. Is there now or has there ever been herbicides applied to the soil? Now or in the past has there been pesticides applied to the plants? DDT for an example once in the human system it can take weeks or even months before there are no detectable residue and can take years to be completely removed from some soils. And remember just a couple of decades ago chemical companies like Monsanto were claiming DDT was good for our health. While experts say toxic pollution levels declined dramatically in the Great Lakes since the 1970s, the decline in persistent chemical pollution leveled off in the 1980s. In some cases toxic chemical levels in the Great Lakes have recently risen, as atmospheric deposits of PCBs, DDT and other banned chemicals in the US are blown thousands of miles by winds from countries that still use these compounds. As a result, fresh samples of DDT can be found today in the tissues of Great Lakes fish, even though DDT was banned for use in the US in the early 1970s.

These chemical deposits are not limited to the Great Lakes. EPA reported that fish advisories against eating PCB contaminated fish rose 41% across the US from 1995 to 1996. Consumers need to educate themselves and make informed decisions. If you must eat fish you can reduce your exposure to PCBs in fish by the way you cook the fish and should avoid altogether certain types of fish for women of reproductive age if how and where the fish came from. It is believed that 95% of human exposure to toxic chemicals comes through the diet, and fish is a major route of exposure since they more readily bioaccumulate toxic compounds. Still, these fish advisories are too often ignored by consumers or not enforced by local health agencies.

The only sure and safe way to control the soil, plants and the water is to grow a garden yourself and you will know for sure what you allowed into the soil and what you put into the soil. Knowledge of what type of fertilizers and/or pesticides you used would help you understand what is in the plants. In most people's back yards or a shared community victory garden you can learn how to grow truly organically. If you believe you just are not ready to give up meat than eat only lean meats from organically fed animals, along with other sources of organic protein. You may want to consider, if you have access to some land the raising of your own Buffalo or Ostrich or Rabbit or a combination for Varity. These meats are very testy and have 50% to 80% less fat than commercial beef or pork, depending on what you feed them. Again you may have to grow your own animal feed to control what the animal is eating and you will know you used no hormones, fast grow chemicals or harmful medications that can be passed on to you and yours.

 

You should always exercise for at least 30 minutes everyday. That’s about 2 miles of walking per day or less jogging or swimming. Take SeaSilver everyday. Chapter 3               

I started dieting and read every book on the subject of dieting and that is saying something, and tried many diets. They all would help a little. I'd loss some weight and gain it back, the old yo yo trick. Nearly all of them overlooked the most important thing you need to know. And that is to get your pH back in tune and in balance with its self and Mother Nature. (See Chapter on pH)

 

How do you do that? An old Yaqui Indian told my granddad the secret to a long and healthy life was in the Lemon or Lime and that it is God's way of balancing the body and bringing it back into harmony with itself.

 

With that in mind I started a major campaign to learn as much as I could about the Lemon and Lime. LemonFastTM recipe: 10 day LemonFast program

 

Place in blender, and blend well to liquefy:

•    One (1) regular size lemon or four (4) limes (organic), chopped

•    Two (2) Tbsp. (Or one (1) if diabetic) of genuine pure organic maple syrup, grade B

•    1/10th tsp. of cayenne pepper (or to taste)

•    One (1) quart purified water

The pH Factor

Chapter 4

The health of the body and mind are very much governed by the pH levels of the blood and the bodily fluids. Normal pH level for the blood is 7.4 and the range goes from 7.35 to 7.45. This is pure scientific fact. For everyone the temperature of the body is 98.6 degrees and the pH of the blood is exactly 7.4 when it is operating at peak efficiency. This very narrow range is critical for homeostasis, otherwise the human system gets out of balance and disease can overtake the body.

The pH scale ranges from 1-14. The highest acid level possible is 1pH and the most alkaline level possible is a 14pH. What is measured is the proportion of hydrogen ions (H+) relative to hydroxyls (OH-) within arterial blood. It is expressed as a negative logarithm. This means that a drop in pH indicates an increase in hydrogen ions and a decrease in hydrogen ions is demonstrated by a rise in pH.  It reflects a balance between acids and bases (alkaline) rather than a measure of total acids in solution.  Body chemistry (fluids) has a delicate range between 6.8-7.4 pH for proper maintenance of health. Maintaining this pH range is necessary for the whole body to function well physically, mentally and emotionally. Tremendous amounts of research indicates that the cells of the body need proper pH balance for optimum performance.

The problem is that most people do not have any serious understanding of the major importance of monitoring and maintaining proper pH levels of the bodily fluids. It is very easy to do and the cost is minimal. Most health food stores or pharmacies carry such a pH testing kit. It can be done in the privacy of the home and takes only seconds. The urine is the best indicator of the state of the pH of the blood, although there is a test for the saliva. When a pH strip is place in the urine stream it will indicate whether this bodily fluid is acidic or alkaline. From this reading one can take the necessary steps to keep it at the right levels or bring it within a healthy range. So many people that are introduced to this idea are very curious about what all this means to them and they must read up on the matter for there to be any benefit

 Urine runs slightly acid pH and it is normal for readings to range from 6.0 to the 7.4. Throughout the day, the readings will vary. Usually in the morning, the level will be lower because no food has been eaten for 8 to 10 hours. With the consumption of food, it will rise during the day, depending upon each individual’s circumstances. If the proper ratio of alkaline to acid foods is eaten, the pH of the urine will be the indicator. One has to understand that when the term alkaline or acid is used it is the state of the ash of the metabolized food that is being measured. This ash (waste) that is excreted by the cells, enters the extra-cellular fluid, makes its way into the blood stream and determines the blood pH. For example, the pH of milk is alkaline, however it is metabolized as an acid ash. Likewise the pH of lemon juice is extremely acidic, but it is metabolized as an alkaline ash. It is the amount of these waste products in concentration in the intracellular and extracellular fluid that determines the state of the pH of the blood. These waste products enter the blood stream and therefore increase the concentration of Hydrogen ions (H+) or Hydroxyls (OH-), thus either raising or lowering the pH of the blood. When Hydroxyls outnumber Hydrogen ions, the pH is a slightly alkaline. If the reverse is true, then the body activates the buffer system, by adding alkaline minerals into the bloodstream. This in turn brings the blood pH within the proper range.

By eating the wrong foods (too much acid ash), the body is in a state of stress. If the pH of the urine is constantly in the high acid range then this is called acidosis. When the urine pH is 6.0 and below for extended periods of time, it indicates that body fluids elsewhere are too acidic. This puts an extra burden on the body because it is constantly attempting to rid itself of an acid medium. Consequently, when the urine pH is normal, the blood pH is normal. However, when the urine pH is overly acidic the blood pH is likely below 7.35 and this state of acidosis is extremely dangerous. This is where depletion of important minerals occurs, resulting in a host of health problems. The magnitude of this information is of incredible importance to someone who is fighting a disease, overcoming an illness, or desiring to be in a state of optimum health.

The cell, the basic unit of life is slightly alkaline with pH is in the 7.3 to 7.4 range. Buffers in our body constantly adjust our pH balance, which keep our blood from becoming either too acidic or too alkaline. Our bones, lungs, kidneys, liver and other processes all keep our pH at normal levels. Healthy cells contain large amounts of alkaline substances such as oxygen, bicarbonate and certain minerals. However, the wear and tear of daily life gradually causes our cells to lose their alkalinity and become more acidic. This scenario makes us more prone to disease. Over 90% of Americans become overly acidic during their lifetimes, due in part to many factors. Diet is one of the major reasons. The saying “you are what you eat” is a true, but we are more about what we digest and assimilate. If our digestive tract is lined with mucus, toxins and dried fecal matter then we are not in a position to benefit from the right foods.

 This is why using the potent detoxifying fruits of lemon and lime is so important. By doing the LemonFastTm, we can reestablish the small intestines’ natural pH climate. If we eat foods that metabolized as an alkaline ash (70% to 80%) then our bodily fluids will have a slightly alkaline reading. For most Americans this is not the case. The foods that they consume create mostly acid ash and consequently the bodily fluids become acidic. Keep in mind that the blood is composed of 85 percent water. It is the state of this water that by in large determines our health. As explained previously, water ionizes into hydrogen ions (H+) or hydroxyls (OH-). These molecules form with the molecules of other minerals to determine the pH of the bodily fluids.

 

Body pH, First Line of Defense

Factors such as toxins, stress, lack of exercise, inadequate water intake and failure to control weight all push the body to a more acid state. They used to say that the body’s first line of defense is the immune system. However, there is a growing consensus amongst scientists that pH is a more important factor. Without the pH being in the right state, the lymph nodes are compromised. The adult human body is comprised of approximately 10 gallons of water. The pH of this fluid, which is contained in every cell throughout the body, is either acid or alkaline. The ideal situation is for all of these cells to be in an alkaline solution. However when the pH of the urine indicates otherwise, it means that all the water in the body is acidic. This affects the chemistry of the entire body. The human being was designed by God to be able to constantly heal itself. If we go counter to the manual that we have been given (The Holy Bible) then we will experience a diminished quality of life. 

According to research, total healing of chronic illness only takes place when and if the blood, intra-cellular and extra-cellular fluids are restored to a normal, slightly alkaline pH. There are two organs of the body where acid is supposed to be in abundance. They are the stomach and the mantle of the skin. All other areas of the body are meant to be in an alkaline state. However, due to the poor diet and lifestyle of our modern culture, the intestines are generally more acidic than nature intended it to be. This creates a climate where parasites and bacterial infestation can manifest. Most people do not know that their diets create a toxic, acidic, anaerobic (oxygen deprived), parasite-laden, and systemically diseased body. If they knew how to reverse this trend then many would. Maintenance of pH depends on Hydrogen ion concentration, H+ ions produced by metabolism. The pH is a measure of expressing extremely small concentrations of acids in solution. The scale is exponential. A change of one unit is actually a ten-fold change. A pH reading of 6.0 is ten times more acidic than a pH of 7.0 or a reading of 5.0 is one hundred times more acidic than a level at 7.0

Acids are substances that can provide a hydrogen ion. Strong acids hold their H+ ion weakly, so that it is free to dissociate and act on other substances. Weak acids hold the hydrogen more tightly so it does not contribute as greatly to free hydrogen ion concentration. As a result the solution has a higher (less acidic) pH.

 

Acid Buffering

Natural buffer systems help blood keeps its pH constant. Alkaline minerals, Bicarbonates, phosphates, and intra-cellular proteins are ready to regulate the acid in our bodies and restore the necessary alkalinity in our blood. The human body has a buffering system by which substances can enter the bloodstream and resist changes in pH (acid concentration) by undergoing a reversible reaction. For example, when hydrogen ion concentration increases, alkaline minerals (calcium) neutralize the acid and only a small change in pH will occur. Without the buffer system the change in blood pH would be life threatening. Our lungs breathe in alkaline oxygen and eliminate acid wastes in the form of carbon dioxide. The kidneys eliminate excessive amounts of either acid or alkaline substances in the urine. Our bones constantly release their alkaline minerals—calcium, magnesium, sodium, potassium, zinc, boron, copper, and strontium in order to neutralize acids that the body produces or ingest.

 An example of a buffer is the carbonic acid (H2CO3) and bicarbonate (H+HCO3-) system. This buffer is a pH shock absorber, which temporarily binds to the free hydrogen ion, and it becomes a rapid response. The carbonic acid dissociates to carbon dioxide (CO2) and H2O and the lungs expel the acid waste resulting in a small change in pH. Without the presence of bicarbonate the concentration of H+ ions would increase and the blood would become extremely acidic.

The uniqueness of this buffer system is that the reaction is reversible. The hydrogen ion can be given back. When alkali is added to solution, carbonic acid provides the proton to neutralize the alkali, resulting in only a small change in pH, that otherwise would be much greater with the increase of hydroxide (OH-) ions. Through the complex chemical regulation of carbonic acid (by the lungs) and of base (alkaline) bicarbonate (by the kidneys) the body maintains the hydrogen ion concentration (pH) which keeps the extra cellular fluid between 6.8 and 7.4

 

Maintaining narrow pH is critical to health

The pH range indicates the amount of oxygen in your system. Each .10 = 10% less oxygen in your system. This means that if your pH is 6.2, you have 20% less oxygen than someone who has a pH of 6.4. The correlation between high acid pH levels and chronic degenerative disorders is quite strong. The lack of oxygen in the blood creates a breeding ground for many of the diseases that confront our modern society. The body tries to neutralize the high acidity with oxygen (alkaline). When the body is in a chronic state of acidosis, the body is spending all its oxygen reserves trying to neutralize the acid. Consequently, it neglects the function of metabolism and toxic waste removal. This can lead to a chronically low oxygen levels and high toxic levels.

The foods that we eat can help increase our oxygen reserves. This is one of the reasons that alkaline foods should be between 70% and 80% of the diet. Foods that contain both fat and protein are low in oxygen-weight ratios and they can further deplete the body because it takes more oxygen to metabolize them. Foods that are metabolized as alkaline ash such as spinach, broccoli, collards and a host of green leafy foods are made up of almost 50% oxygen. In 1931, Otto Warburg of Germany won his first Nobel Prize for his discovery of oxygen deficiency in the cancer growth process. The Protein, Calcium Myth

Western Civilization is experiencing a tremendous increase in Osteoporosis. The fact that men and women in their senior years are losing calcium from their bones is alarming to all. What to do about this epidemic has both scientist and layman puzzled. As calcium is lost, the bones and teeth become more porous until they become fragile and susceptible to breakage. Consequently, the RDA of calcium goes up and up. Our medical profession has responded by telling everyone, especially women that they need to consume more dairy products to prevent the disease. Current figures show that this has done little to stem the growth of the disease.

The question needs to be addressed as to whether this is a disease of old age or a symptom of improper diet and pH balance. As discussed previously, when the acid levels of the blood are too high the buffer system releases calcium and magnesium from the bones. Milk and cheese are rich in calcium, however they create acid ash when metabolized. Thus their intake makes the body more acidic. They also are mucus forming foods and they line the walls of the digestive tract thereby preventing assimilation of proper nutrition. As with any objective view of western disease, Osteoporosis is quite possibly a disease that reflects our modern lifestyle. Research into an African population reveals some startling facts that we should consider. The women of the Bantu race do not suffer from Osteoporosis. Their daily average in take of Calcium is 350 mg per day, and yet no one has the disease. Although on average they produce eight children in a lifetime, they maintain remarkable bone density. What does this suggest? That calcium intake from dairy products has nothing to do with preventing osteoporosis.

The cumulative research of the last 20 years has proven conclusively what causes Osteoporosis, however there are no serious campaigns to educate us of the facts. In fact, quite the opposite is true. There is a tremendous amount of money spent on marketing animal based foods and the consumption by the public is indicative of this successful campaign. The dairy and cattle industries are heavily subsidized by the U.S. government, which in turn establishes the recommended daily allowance of these foods.

The truth of the matter is that we take in too much protein, especially the protein that is found in meat, dairy products, poultry and fish. All of these proteins are metabolized as acid wastes thus lowering the body pH and stressing the buffer system. The human body has very low protein requirements. We cannot store excess protein. Once the protein is digested and converted into amino acids, if not used, it is left circulating in the blood. When the amount of amino acids and their bi-products accumulate in the blood, the pH level drops as Hydrogen ion (H+) concentration rises. In order to balance the blood pH the body must take its most readily available alkaline minerals (Calcium and Magnesium) and draw them from the bones. The result is high levels of uric acid, calcium and magnesium in the urine.

  The facts are evident. The more protein we eat the more the calcium is taken from the bones. When people eat a large meal consisting of animal proteins, there is considerable loss of calcium and magnesium. Studies have shown high levels of these alkaline minerals in the urine after such a meal. These important alkaline minerals are not easily replenished when the pH level is too acidic. In fact, if the pH levels are too low the body can not assimilate additional calcium that is digested whether by animal or plant based foods. Experiments have shown that when fed a meal dominated by plant based foods, there is little or no calcium in the urine.

Why is this information not common knowledge? One has to look at the entire picture to grasp the truth. It all comes down to money. Warning the people to minimize protein intake would compromise the industries that sell dairy and animal flesh products. These industries are extremely rich and powerful. They have deep pockets to funnel into advertising campaigns and they use the image of sports celebrities to appeal to the masses. When you see your favorite sports star with a milk mustache, you feel comfortable about consuming many milk and dairy products. These athletes seem to be the epitome of health and we are induced to follow suit and be like them.

Should not your doctor be aware of this information? Most of the time they are too engrained in the system and their very diets often reflect a poor choice of foods. Often times the quality of their food intake and lifestyle is not as good as the patients that they attend. Most of these General Practitioners did not study much nutrition while in Medical School because it is not heavily stressed in the curriculum. Further, on going education that doctors receive is either in journals funded by the pharmaceutical companies or at Medical conferences funded by these same companies. The medical system is designed to treat and cure through surgery and prescription, rather than adherence to holistic lifestyle methods. If this were the case then the number of doctor visits would be diminished greatly as well as the need for the continuation of prescribed drugs.

 Just imagine how quickly a doctor who promoted a program of pH balance would come under attack from his colleagues especially if his patients had total healing. It would be difficult for the Doctor’s patients to understand why the departure from what is considered normal medical practice. However after positive results occurred it would be easier for others to apply the principles. Word of mouth spreads very quickly. This practice would be counter productive to the inherent interests of the Medical Industry.

  Thomas Edison had a wonderful vision of the state of medicine in the future but it is doubtful that he had any idea as to how big a business it would become. Thus the medical establishments are seen by people as a “cure it” with drugs rather than teach me to heal myself. Even the Bible says “physician heal thyself”. They (doctors) practice what they preach. Consequently, it is up to every individual to educate themselves to the best of their ability and to be the master of their own vessel, the human body. The Bible refers to the body as the temple and it is our responsibility to care for it. 

Now that you have been made aware of the significance of maintaining a proper pH level for the health of your body, it must be put to practice. Most health food and drug stores carry testing kits. It is certainly worthwhile to make this small investment and find out where your levels are. Then as you adjust the diet more in line to the way God intended us to eat, the pH will start to normalize.

Most adults will be in for an awakening because of the diet that they have followed for years. Because the foods they consume have been creating acid wastes in the metabolic process, the urine will show an acid reading. This is important to recovering a balanced pH. The Sugar Diabetes Epidemic

Before sugar came on the scene, diabetes was unknown!

  Chapter 5

I am not a Doctor, Lawyer or an Indian Chief. I am just a guy who was mis-diagnosed as having heart disease and was told I would die from it in the near future. When in reality I actually had diabetes and had the symptoms for at least ten years before that. Although I had many doctor exams and regular check-ups. My diabetes was still missed. It is estimated that as many as 33% of Americans suffer from diabetes and many of those don't even know they have the disease. 

 Diabetes is a national killer. With heart disease and cancer leading the way. Many times the underlining cause of death is diabetes, but is often listed as heart attack or other causes. Diabetes can lead to heart failure, kidney disease and disease of all your vital organs. It can also lead to blindness and often amputations.

 

It was early 1997 when I was first told I had heart trouble and in July 2000 my diabetes was discovered. I weighed in at 389 lbs. My blood pressure was 198/110. One year later I was down to 280 lbs. and my BP was 140/80. I have no detectable heart trouble and my BP remains within normal range of a healthy 40-year-old male. I have more energy and stamina now then when I was 40, my thinking is clearer than it has been in years and my libido has gone off the charts. I attribute this miracle to God’s healing powers and His bringing me the knowledge of the LemonFastTM program.

 

I was diagnosed with adult type II Diabetes, it came as quite a shock since for the last three years I had been under the care of an well known and highly rated orange county Cardiologist who claimed I had heart trouble and told my wife and I on more than one occasion that my wife was likely to wake up in the middle of the night and find me dead. He had come to this prognosis by running all the standard tests, listening to my heart, taking vital signs, chest x-rays, EKG's, blood tests and tread mills, some unpleasant and all very expensive.  To complicate matters even more I had no insurance. At the time I thought I was very fortunate to have found a physician who would see me without insurance.

 

I had been experiencing some palpitations and some irregular heart beats. I thought I should see a specialist since as I have said I tipped the scales at 389 pounds at the time. However I found in looking for one they were all booked up for weeks and some for months and still others flat out would not see me with out insurance. Even though at age 55 I was a prime candidate for a heart attack.  That did not seem to make much difference to them.

 

I had been an athlete most of my younger life but had allowed myself to blow up by no or very little exercise, and by eating as much or more than ever, and eating rich processed and often fast foods. All of that was a recipe for a short and unhealthy life. My Cardiologist quickly put me on high blood pressure medication (zestoretic) and told me if I did not lose weight and start eating right I would likely die of a heart attack in the not too distant future. He insisted that I stay away from fatty foods, exercise and eat a bland diet and that should bring my weight down along with my blood pressure.

 

The diet consisted of mostly fish, chicken and lots of fruit and veggies and of course included smaller portions of it and no supplements.

 

I started doing everything I could to loss weight and I did lose some but I would just seem to always gain it back and it seemed to always come back faster then when I would lose it. During this time I knew that I had cataracts and the one in my right eye was the worst. For some reason most likely the money or I was waiting for some new broke though in cataract surgery, I had put off corrective surgery, but than had decided to go ahead with it. That was when my eye doctor ordered, before the surgery a new blood test, which included a 12hour fast glucose blood test. The test came back saying my blood sugar was 272 they say a normal blood sugar count is between 80 and 140 but I think your much better off to keep it more in the range of between 80 and 100.They said that I should contact my primary care giver or my cardiologist. So I tried, but was unable to talk directly with my cardiologist or even get an appointment right away. I was however, called back in a few days by one of his nurses who informed me on the phone that I had diabetes and I should contact a diabetes doctor right away. She said she felt I would need to go on insulin right away and I should see a doctor right away for that reason. So that started the run around all over again of trying to find a specialist who would see and treat me with no insurance. After a couple of weeks of that it became apparent that I was failing in that endeavor. But I felt that something had to be done about this new diagnose that my well educated, and expensive cardiologist had missed. All the Endocrinologists I was able to contact all said that their treatment for a person in my shoes would be insulin shots. So I turned it over to the Lord.

 

So believing that God helps those that help themselves, I contacted the American Diabetes Association, talked with them on the phone and got most of their books and catalogs sent to me. They are on line at www.diabetes.org . All appeared to me to be good information, and the only readily available source. However I would soon learn that the American Diabetes Association is several years behind the latest learning curve on diabetes and how best to deal with it. But I still wanted more, so I went back on line and started searching for everything I could find on type II diabetes. There are two main kinds of diabetes. Type I you’re born with. I have type II diabetes. When you eat, your body turns your food into glucose (sugar). Glucose fuels the cells. In healthy people, a hormone called insulin helps the glucose get into the cell and helps to keep your blood sugar in balance. Too-high levels of glucose in the blood can damage your organs over a period of time. Many factors — diet, alcohol, activity, stress, illness, medications, and changes in hormone levels — can affect your blood sugar. But you can monitor your level with frequent blood glucose self-testing. These tests are available over-the-counter at pharmacies.

 

You prick the tip of your finger and touch a drop of your blood to a strip of paper. You compare the color on the strip of paper to a chart to determine your blood sugar level, or with a small computer test kit. Knowing the level of sugar in your blood helps you learn what makes your blood sugar levels rise and fall, so you can adjust your diet

Changes in your routine can cause swings in your blood sugar level. Here are some suggestions for how to handle factors that affect your level:

 

 

Balance your diet and medications. If you take diabetes medications, be consistent on a day-to-day basis in the timing and amount of food you eat. By controlling when you eat and how much, you control the times your blood sugar is higher (such as after meals) and how high or low your blood sugar level goes. Whenever you go off schedule, you risk upsetting the balance between your diet and your medication. Too little food (in comparison to your medication) may result in very low blood sugar and a hypoglycemic reaction. Too much food, and your blood sugar will be too high.

Test yourself after exercising. Exercise usually lowers your blood sugar level for several hours. But exercise can also increase your blood sugar if your insulin level is too low. Until you know how your body responds to exercise, test your blood glucose just after exercising and then again several hours later.

Monitor the effects of stress and illness. Psychological stress or the physical stress of a cold, influenza (flu) or a bacterial illness can cause your body to produce hormones that prevent insulin from working properly. Major trauma or other medical problems, such as a heart attack, also can increase blood sugar levels dramatically. During times of stress and illness, it's important to monitor blood glucose frequently. You should also have a vaccination against pneumococcal pneumonia and a yearly flu shot.

Avoid alcohol. Alcohol prevents the release of glucose from your liver and can increase the risk of your blood sugar falling too low. If you drink alcoholic beverages, do so only in moderation, and eat food before you have a drink.

 

The daily decisions you make — when you test your blood glucose, what and how much you eat, and how much you exercise — can have immediate as well as long-term effects on your diabetes. They can result in well-managed blood sugar levels or in emergencies that require immediate treatment.

With many people who die of heart attack, stoke, kidney failure and other things. Often the underlining cause was actually diabetes. You can also be insulin resistant. Diabetes can cause other complications. It can damage your eyes and nerves, leading to blindness and amputations. Most often starting with your fingers and toes and then hands, feet, arms, legs, and you get the idea. It also makes heart and blood vessel disease much more likely. And it can contribute to high blood pressure. Stress is a factor! The attack on your vital organs comes from within yourself, by a chemical manufactured by your own body called ketones. They attack and destroy your vital organs.

 

Diabetes is serious. Diabetes is also a very common disease and is rising in our population as a whole but is rising at an alarming rate in epidemic proportions among our young. A large percentage of obese adults are developing diabetes and more people are obese than ever before including children and teenagers. It is a global phenomenon. 150 million people around the world is estimated to have diabetes and maybe twice as many have it and do not know it. Out of the billions of people on earth more than 90% have never been tested for diabetes. Here in this country many believe we have the best medical care of anywhere. We still miss or don’t test for diabetes. Many American physicians consider themselves experts on nutrition. Few are actually knowledgeable on the all important subject. That’s because most are never taught. American physicians get none or at best very little training in medical school on nutrition and dietetics. The average medical student in America receives just 2 ½ hours of training in nutrition over four years. This is clearly not enough time to gain a thorough knowledge of the importance between nutrition and good health. Because of that they often completely disregard the important roll diet, pH balance, and vitamins and minerals play in treating and preventing disease. That is especially true when it comes to diabetes that can lead to heart disease and cancer, the so-called number one and number two killers of our time. 

 

You should try and find a physician who would be willing to read this book and see if they might come to similar conclusions and work with you in a more collaborative fashion when it comes to this program for your lifestyle changes in eating habits and nutrition.   

If you have headaches, blurry vision, thirsty and need to go to the bathroom often and have dry, itchy skin, you may have high blood glucose (diabetes). (See your Doctor) Or some of your symptoms are that you feel shaky, tired, hungry, confused and nervous your blood glucose is too low you may have low blood glucose (hypoglycemia). (See your Doctor) which is also serious. Hypoglycemia often leads to full-blown type II diabetes. If you think you have diabetes or hypoglycemia see a doctor and at least get tested. But if you know you have diabetes you know the drill is to lower your glucose levels, with a good diet, exercise and weight loss. If you are hypoglycemic the drill is eat or drink something with 15 grams of carbohydrates right away. And both should do regular blood testing at home so that you will know for sure what your blood levels really are when you want or need to know. I believe that walking one hour per day and following this program you’ll be able to lose weight and if you walk only three or four times a week following this program you’ll be able to maintain your weight. Diabetics should exercise after every meal.

If you are on insulin or oral medication keeping with the above goals and smaller portion sizes of food will help the medication work far better.

 

Fellow the LemonFastTM miracle drink program and repeat it as needed for about two days or so, out of each the month. Always chart your progress by listing daily your weight, blood sugar, blood pressure, pH, medications if any, exercise amount, water intake, estimated stress level, if you were able to nap or not, if you socialized or not that day, your vitamin/mineral intake, if you were able to meditate or not, and list any travel you may do. The blood pressure should be taken three times daily, morning, and noon and before you go to bed and in alternating arms. Test blood sugar everyday before meals or anytime you feel you need to know your blood sugar levels. Weigh daily to see if you’re losing or gaining or just maintaining a good weight for you. Take your pH everyday of your first void of the morning. You can also collect your urine through out the day and night to check for your daily average. All diabetics should have a medical exam at least once a month and complete blood work up every three months. (See daily monitoring chart)

 

It may surprise you that potatoes, carrots, beets and many other root vegetables are fed to cattle and pigs as animal feed. The reason is that they are rich starch and are good fatteners before market. The same thing happens to us. We should not eat it. Diabetics should never eat them; it is like eating pure sugar. Inside our digestive tracts, they are immediately converted to pure sugar. The body absorbs it

Quickly, and insulin response is significantly high. Hybrid corns with large kernels have the same detrimental effects of high sugar load with rapid insulin response. So add to the list of no no’s of refined sugar and processed grain products, including processed and bleached and or refined white flour and white rice. Add potatoes, carrots, beets and corn to the bad for you list. These root vegetables also attract and absorb any toxins that are in the soil including arsenic and other poisons. The green skins on potatoes can cause allergies and other sickness. The sprouts and buds on potatoes contain harmful chemicals and potatoes that are bruised are diseased and contain carcinogenic substances.

Fruits generally are rich in fructose, nutrients and have great flavor. However fructose, like white refined sugar, is converted in your body to saturated fat and cholesterol (better for you than animal fat). Diabetics would do good to remember unless it is burned off by exercise immediately after consumption it well do some damage. So that is one reason to always exercise after all meals and no meals should be taken after 6:pm or the sugar can be doing damage to your organs and nerves all night while you sleep. Protect yourself by choosing fruit that is fresh and organically grown, if you can’t grow it yourself. They are also best in season and never eat fruit from a can. Sun dried fruit, dried by you is best next to freshly grown by you. Watch out for dried fruit that contain sulfur and we do not recommend frozen fruit. Beware of juices that say ‘‘from concentrate’’ on the label. These products whether canned, bottled or frozen can be very high in pesticides, molds, fungicides, coloring agents and other dangerous contaminants.

Raisins, watermelon, bananas, dates and pineapples, even though they are fructose they are all too rich in it and raises the sugar level too high, too fast and stays high too long. Therefore they can do damage so they are not recommended for those reasons. Coconut gets 35% of its calories from fat, 90% percent of which is saturated and is not recommended.

 

If you feel you must eat carbs you should only eat whole grain products. Such as whole-grain breads, whole-grain pasta, wheat bran, oatmeal and other natural grains. Whole grains can fulfill most if not all of your calorie requirements. But remember they create acid ash, so they should only be a part of your over all strategy. Rule of thumb is no more than 20% of your daily intake. See acid and alkaline chart. Whole grains should play a very important roll in your new life style lemonFast program. They are low in fat and high in cleansing fiber. It is well known that populations that consume whole grains have low rates of breast, prostate, and colon cancers as well as diabetes. Use only unprocessed grain always organic unless you can grow them yourself. Avoid all refined or processed, or enriched gain products and look for them with no added fat, sugar or artificial ingredients.

Nuts and seeds are recommended because they are loaded with nutrients, strong proteins, vitamins, minerals, and essential fatty acids. They are rich in B-6 and E and have minerals of calcium, copper, magnesium, manganese and zinc. Nuts and seeds should not make-up more than 20% of your total intake. Many are an acid food, also and can raise your acid pH levels. Nuts and seeds are high in vegetable fat and in excessive amounts can increase the risks of heart disease and cancer.

Free Radicals and antioxidants

  Chapter 6

At one time not very long ago we believed it was normal for our health to go downhill with age. Today, we know that much of that aging process is do to free radicals, which are highly reactive molecules that your body produces during normal metabolic processes. Short on electrons, free radicals scavenge them from your body’s tissues, leaving damaged cells behind. As we age, this damage shows up in the form of clogged arteries, cataracts and other damage inside our bodies. Antioxidants is a defensive substances produced by the body from many fresh fruits and vegetables that contain the vitamins that contain the antioxidants. The body uses these antioxidants to wipe out free radicals hopefully before they can do their damage. It is very important that we have enough antioxidants in our bodies to neutralize free radicals. If we don’t get enough, the result is called oxidative damage.

You find antioxidant nutrients in vitamins C and E and Beta-carotene, a form of vitamin A.

It is best to eat your vegetables, fruit and whole grains raw. Boiling dried beans are an exception. Cooking food raises the blood sugar elevating effect of carbohydrates (glycemic index). Pre-historic man ate all his food raw and that may be why we made it to this point in our history. Or is modern man going to eat himself to death with man grown and man made contaminated foods?

Dad and I put in a garden that grew beautiful white corn, which was not only great eating raw but unbelievably good after roasting (with the ears still in there husks) covered generously with real churned butter from our own cows and freshly ground Chile powder from our garden. Sweet white corn also made the best corn tortillas.  Which became a staple in our home and we used them like bread. Now that is not to say we didn’t have bread, because we did. My Mother made, from Scratch, some of the best home baked breads, muffins and biscuits you could ever hope to taste. She learned, much of that from my grandma... who was the champ. My Dad did make the best biscuits and pancakes, with home made maple syrup, the best that you could put in your mouth.

 

My Dad and I also raised sugar cane, pinto beans, butter beans, sweet onions, green onions, tomatoes, peppers, squash, potatoes, lettuces, radishes, and many other veggies.  Which all helped to sustain the family between jobs, which were scarce in those days. El Paso had always been economically distressed.

 

One of the best things we did was grow “Whole Green Chiles” there is no better smell in the air then whole green chilies roasting over an open pit or BBQ of hot colds.  We raised what my Dad named “jumbo’s” they were big chilies, some a foot long! Jumbo’s were the best tasting I had ever had.

 

That is until years later my wife Peggy would roast chilies out doors when we lived in Santa Fe, New Mexico, very near the town squire, when in the fall you can smell chilies roasting all over town.

 

Peggy stuffs the chilies before roasting with goat cheese and dusts them lightly with organically grown whole grain wheat flour.  That is the best taste treat on the planet, and as a bonus chilies are high in vitamin C... and non-fattening.

Preparing Food

 

One of my passions is preparing food, foods from all around the world.

Some of the dishes I enjoy most is Mexican dishes, which I find is an interesting combination of Spanish and American Indian foods and is the main food in the southwest.  El Paso is truly an International City; the only thing between Mexico and the US is the Rio Grande River. On the Texas side is El Paso and on the Chihuahua side is Juarez with a combined population of more than 2 million mostly poor people. Many of Mexican descent (Latino’s) hence some of the best Mexican food on earth can be found on both sides of the river.

 

Some of the very best food I remember came after diving for change under the international bridges that connected the two countries where many tourists walked and would toss their pocket change off the bridge into the Rio Grande, for us poor kids to dive and often fight over. After several hours of that we would head over to Juarez where you could find a street wagon vender with chitlins (fried pork) innards) wrapped in tinny corn tortillas for about 10c US. They had great food on those wagons, corn on the cob, avocado’s, chili Colorado, limes and other things I couldn’t identify. I never got sick and never knew anyone who did.

I now have modified that some and go to seat down restaurants and settle for a combination plate usually comprising of home made corn tortillas (white corn), enchilada’s consisting of goat cheese with copped up green onions olive oil. Chile Relleno’s are fired whole green chilies stuffed with goat cheese.  Refried pinto beans (frijoles) with same goat cheese, olive oil, and lots of hot salsa made with diced chili pepper jalapenos, sweet white onions, ripe fresh tomatoes, cilantro, lots of garlic, black pepper, and sea salt. Hopefully, veggies from your own garden, or at least from a friend’s. ( see some of my recipes in the appendix)

Organic Foods

Even if you buy your food from a grocer who claims it is organic or even if your able to buy direct from a organic farmer their is no guarantee that the food is truly organic, much less know the history of the soil the plants were grown in. The soil is the basic foundation from which all good health springs from and any hope for life extenuation. So like any good building it starts from the foundation. For our health the foundation is the soil full of earthworms and microbes.

 

Everyone who lives in a house has a yard and if it is not cemented over you have dirt (soil). It could be in your backyard, side yard or even in your front yard you have the foundation to start your own organic garden. If you live in an apt or complex with no yard you can grow food in containers or organize a communal victory garden on vacant lots privately owned or get your city to donate some land for that purpose. To start, get a sample of the dirt you plan to grow in. Take it to your local university; many times it can be your city collage, county or state college system. The very best is one that has an agriculture dept.

 

There you can have your soil tested or you can use a private company. The test results should tell you what is in your soil and its pH balance. Now if there is no detectable poisons or toxins in your soil your ready for the next step, which is recruiting some worm engineers to start working your soil. The earthworm is Mother Nature’s way of purifying and preparing the soil for plants and is the foundation for your healthy food that you will eat. Earthworms have been quietly aerating, tilling, and fertilizing the soil for eons and are our partner in the fight to save the environment and we as a species. The earthworm is the most important foundational ingredient in our quest for long life and good health. Commercial farmers have destroyed the worm habitat in an effort to "improve" agricultural efficiency. The use of chemical fertilizers has increased the salinity of the soil, making it poison to the worms. Herbicides, pesticides and other chemicals, can kill indiscriminately, plant life and the all-important microbes that help the worms brake down the wastes (worm food), destroying the lifeblood of the soil. Over-tilling of the soil destroys the worm tunnels that are vital to their efforts of aerating the soil. It can also cause land erosion of the vital topsoil. Worms faithfully fertilize and aerate the soil despite our damaging efforts to raise food for the billions of mother earth's hungry-children. They can even solve our problem with human organic waste...and yet, the modern system seems to not be interested, so we just keep on polluting our rivers, bays, oceans and air with human waste. How human waste gets into the air we breath is that most cities incinerate at least some of their human waste and it is released into the atmosphere. Rotting organic waste in our dumps is polluting our underground water supply. Worms are ready to eat that organic waste and human sewage sludge and in return give us natural fertilizer and feed. And could save billions of taxpayers dollars. It’s a deal that humanity cannot afford to pass up for much longer. You can help the worms and yourself and our planet by using worms as your foundation for your personal organic garden to grow your own healthy balanced food. And you will be providing shelter and food for millions of earthworms.

Organic Gardening Techniques

 

The success or failure of the organic approach depends on how you use and prepare organic matter. Organic matter improves soil tilth and prevents soil compaction and crusting. It increases the water holding ability of the soil and provides a more favorable soil environment for earthworms and beneficial microorganisms. It slows erosion, and in later stages of decay, organic matter releases nitrogen and other nutrients to growing crops. Carbon dioxide from decaying organic matter brings minerals of the soil into solution, making them available to growing plants. Many soils of the world have been ruined, mainly because they have also been depleted of organic matter from prolonged cultivation without proper soil management.

  Sources of organic matter

Animal manures. Where available, animal manures are excellent sources of organic matter and nutrients for the soil. It is best to apply manures after they have been composted and partially broken down. Fresh manure may be applied directly to the soil, but this should be done in fall and turned under so that there is adequate time for sufficient breakdown and ammonia release before crops are planted.

Those who do not have access to fresh or composted animal manures may find packaged dried manures for sale in nurseries and garden stores. Because fresh, composted manure contains high amounts of water, an equal weight contains fewer nutrients than dried manure. Also, the fertility of manures from different sources varies widely.

To interpret the table, note that each 100 pounds of fresh cattle manure contains about one-half pound of available nitrogen, while 100 pounds of dried cattle manure contains about 2 pounds. Compare these amounts to a common commercial fertilizer such as 10-10-10, which contains 10 pounds of nitrogen per 100 pounds. By observing the nutrient content of the major constituents of a fertilizer, a guide to the appropriate rate of application can be developed (see Table 2).

Fresh manure should not be used directly among plants or mixed into soil immediately before seeds or plants are placed in the garden. Fresh manure produces ammonia as it decomposes. Ammonia in direct contact with plant roots can cause damage and must be avoided. Another disadvantage of un-composted manure is the introduction of weed seeds into the garden.

Compost. Where manures are not readily available, you can make compost from lawn clippings, leaves, table scraps and other plant materials. Compost, is not only convenient, it is also inexpensive. Nutrient content of compost is relatively low, but its main benefit is the organic matter it ads to improve soil tilth. 

Green manure and fall cover crops. Where the garden area to be improved is large, or where other forms of organic matter are not readily available, green manuring is often the most economical means for soil improvement. Green manuring means growing a cover crop in your garden and plowing it under, thus adding organic matter to the soil. The greatest response from green manuring comes from not using the garden for one season, while growing a grass or other green manure crop and turning it under in early fall.

Another method is to seed a green manure crop in the fall and turn it under with a plow or large tiller in early spring. With this method, you can continue to use your garden normally, while gradually building up the soil.

In general, you should seed a cover crop in September, not later than October 1. The cover crop protects the garden from erosion during the winter. Turn under the cover crop when it is 6 to 8 inches tall. If it grows taller, cut it before turning it down.

Annual ryegrass is one of the most satisfactory plants for green manuring or covering. Seed it at 1 to 2 pounds per 1,000 square feet of garden space. Seed rye or wheat at 3 to 4 pounds per 1,000 square feet. Thorough incorporation into the soil is important in early spring to prevent re-growth and weeds from these grasses. Wait at least two weeks before planting.

Sawdust

In some areas where sawdust is readily available, it provides an excellent source of organic matter for the soil. You can use sawdust as compost, as mulch or for direct incorporation into the soil. A normal addition of sawdust would be about 3 to 4 bushels per 100 square feet of garden area. You should use only aged sawdust. Sawdust has no appreciable effect on soil acidity.

The major problem with adding sawdust is the greater likelihood of developing nitrogen deficiency. As sawdust breaks down in the soil, it uses nitrogen, making it unavailable to plants. Therefore, along with sawdust you need to add materials that supply nitrogen to keep plants from starving. Apply the additional nitrogen needed at the time the sawdust is added and repeat as a side dressing during the growing season. The garden may need later applications also if plant growth is poor due to lack of nitrogen.

Sewage sludge

 

In some areas, sewage sludge may be available as a source of good organic matter. Two types may be available: digested sludge and dried, activated sludge.

Digested sludge is relatively low quality as a fertilizer in comparison to the other type. Apply and plow in digested sludge in the early fall. Do not apply digested sludge directly where you plan to grow a crop the same season, unless it has been composted. It also makes for a good worm food and can be directly fed to the worms that are living in your garden. It generally contains from 1 to 3 percent nitrogen. Sewage sludge can be a highly variable product. Some sources may contain heavy metal ions and are best not used in the vegetable garden because it can kill worms.

Dried, activated sludge is made from sewage that has been separated from coarse solids, inoculated with microorganisms and aerated. It is filtered, dried in kilns, ground and screened. It is useful as a fertilizer on lawns and is heat-treated, making it sanitary for garden use. This type of sludge may contain from 5 to 6 percent nitrogen. Apply dried, activated sludge at about 5 to 7 pounds per 100 square feet; apply digested sludge at about 7 to 10 pounds per 100 square feet. This is a good food for worms.

One of the major benefits of organic fertilizers is that they break down slowly and are less likely to release nutrients rapidly enough to burn plant roots if used in large amounts.

Since many organic materials break down slowly, they supply nutrients to plants for a much longer period of time without frequent applications. Because they are not quickly soluble, they are not leached from the soil during heavy rains and, therefore, are more continuously effective. Some organic fertilizers also contain micronutrients. Worms will keep this under control and speed up the process.

The availability of nutrients from organic fertilizers depends on their breakdown by soil organisms, which in turn depends on weather and soil conditions. Release of nutrients is much slower when the soil is cool or heavily saturated with water. Also, breakdown slows during drought unless soil is irrigated or heavily mulched to keep in soil moisture and keep temperature more constant. Where you need a quick fertilizer response, worms solve this problem as well. Their nutrients are not available to plants until the organic matter has decomposed, unless you have worms.

Sources of organic fertilizers

Following are some organic fertilizers that supply nutrients but add little or no organic matter.

Fish Meal is the dried, ground, processed material derived from non-edible fish or fish scraps. As a fertilizer it may contain from 8 to 10 percent nitrogen, 4 to 9 percent phosphorus and 2 to 3 percent potassium. As it breaks down, this material gradually becomes available to plants as a fertilizer. Fish fertilizers also benefit plants by the addition of many minor and micronutrients. Fish emulsion is a liquid form often used for houseplants.

Grinding a natural rock containing one or more calcium phosphate minerals makes rock phosphate. It is used either directly after grinding or after concentration as a phosphorus fertilizer. Rock phosphate normally contains between 25 and 30 percent phosphorus. Rock phosphate is more effective in acid soils and relatively ineffective on alkaline soils due to its low solubility. It is most useful as an addition in composting manure and organic materials. Soils low in phosphorus may require ground rock phosphate at about 2 to 4 pounds per 100 square feet of garden soil. When applying with manure or compost, use about 2-1/2 pounds per 25 pounds of manure or compost.

 

Sources of potassium (potash, K2O).

Wood ashes may contain from 4 to 10 percent potassium.

In general, they average about 5 percent potassium with as much as 23 percent calcium. Because of this, they produce an alkaline reaction on the soil. Since they go quickly into solution, you should use them with care. Continued use may raise the pH of the soil, making it too alkaline unless adjustments are made. Use wood ashes at a rate of about 2-1/2 pounds per 100 square feet of garden area. Do not soak ashes in water before application or the potassium will be lost. Do not apply wood ashes if the soil pH is over 6.5. Apply ashes at least 3 weeks before planting seeds. Coal ashes are not beneficial to plant growth.

Greens are sometimes recommended as a source of potassium but are not readily available in many areas. It is a hydrated salt of iron and potassium silicate and contains about 6 percent potassium, which is very slowly available to plants.

Seaweed can be the name for any plant that grows in the ocean, but the material used for fertilizer is usually made from brown or red algae. Giant kelp is seaweed that was harvested for both fertilizer and explosives during World War I. Kelp contains 20 to 25 percent potassium chloride, but the seaweed that is normally available for use as a fertilizer contains from 4 to 13 percent potassium. Although seaweed was once commonly used as a fertilizer, availability is now relatively limited.

 

Other organic fertilizer sources.

 

A wide variety of other materials may be used as fertilizer. Some have a more balanced range of nutrients in them, although often none of the nutrients are in large amounts.

Cottonseed meal is the residue after the oil is extracted from cooked cottonseeds. It averages 6 percent nitrogen, 2 percent phosphorus and 1 percent potassium, along with secondary and micronutrients. Nutrients from cottonseed meal become available to plants gradually. Cottonseed meal produces an acid reaction in the soil.

Soybean meal, as well as cottonseed meal, is mainly used as an animal feed. However, non-feed quality meal is sometimes used as a fertilizer. Its nutrients average about 6 percent nitrogen, 1 percent phosphorus and 2 percent potassium. Its reaction in the soil is only slightly acid.

In some localities, other plant materials are available that may serve as plant nutrients as well as add organic matter. Some of these include tobacco stems, castor pomace, cocoa shell meal, sunflower meal and mushroom compost.

 

Adjusting soil acidity

 

The acidity of a soil is measured in units called pH. The proper soil pH is important for the breakdown of organic matter and the release of nutrients in the soil for plant growth. A soil pH of 7.0 is neutral, neither acid nor alkaline. A pH above 7 is called a sweet or alkaline soil, while a pH below 7 is known as a sour or acid soil. Most garden plants grow best in soil with a pH range from 6.0 to 6.8. Breakdown of organic matter, nutrient release by microorganisms and availability of most nutrients is greatest in this pH range.

A soil test is the only way to accurately determine the pH of a soil, but plant growth may be an indication of pH problems. When you have apparently applied adequate fertilizer, but plant growth is poor, you might suspect improper pH. Ground limestone is normally used to make acid soils less acid, while sulfur is used to make alkaline soils more acid (see Table 3).

Some soils tend to be acid rather than alkaline, making the addition of ground limestone more common than the addition of sulfur. Since the average garden performs best in a pH range from 6.0 to 6.8, Table 2 suggests sulfur or limestone required to make a midway change close to 6.5. Remember that these amounts are approximations, and soil type and conditions may alter the results. Proceed with caution at all times. Ideally, do not apply more than 1 pound of sulfur or 5 pounds of limestone per 100 square feet in one application. If larger amounts are required, split applications between spring and fall to create a gradual increase or decrease. Work the materials thoroughly to a depth of 6 or 7 inches.

If you use wood ashes to reduce acidity, use about two-thirds the amount recommended for limestone.

 

Disease and bug control methods

 

Plant diseases may seriously stunt or even kill plants. They may appear as leaf spots, wilts, stunts, rusts or a variety of other symptoms. Plant diseases may be caused by fungi, bacteria, viruses, nematodes, or may be a response to environmental conditions that produce disease-like symptoms. The key to good disease control is prevention.

Genetic resistance. Whenever available, the use of resistant varieties is the best way to prevent disease problems. Response to disease attack may vary, as indicated by the terms immune, resistant and tolerant. Disease immunity indicates that a plant will not get a disease even though the disease is present. Disease resistance implies that although a plant may occasionally contact the disease, it is much less likely to get it, and if attacked, may not be seriously affected. Tolerance to a disease implies that the plant usually contacts the disease when present but is able to survive in spite of being infected.

Resistant varieties are becoming more readily available in many crops. Look for disease resistance in variety descriptions. Disease resistance of vegetables varies. But be aware that there is a growing controversy over genetically modified organisms (GMO’s). This controversy has led Europe to ban the planting of genetically modified crops and to demand that all existing "GM" products be labeled.  A gene from a jellyfish can be placed in a potato plant, making it light up whenever it needs watering. Rice plants are genetically transformed to produce vitamin A, preventing millions of African children from going blind. Plants are modified to produce plastic or pharmaceuticals. These are just a few of the touted benefits of genetically modified agriculture - the use of genetic engineering to alter crops for the benefit of mankind. But while proponents say this new technology has the potential to end world hunger for the additional 5 billion or so more people estimated to be on earth by the year 2020 and could dramatically improve the quality of life of billions of people, others argue it constitutes the biggest threat to humanity since nuclear energy. Dubbing such genetically altered products "Frankenfoods," critics argue that the technology has been rushed to market. Scientists, they claim, are tampering with nature, risking potentially catastrophic and irreversible ecological disaster. Most of us don’t realize that we have been eating GMO’s for the last 5 years.
 

Crop rotation. Crop rotation is as old as agriculture. Continued cropping in one area allows for buildup of disease organisms. Rotating crops each year to help prevent buildup of organisms in one place can reduce some disease problems. Diseases such as club root and some vascular wilts may persist in the soil for five or more years without the presence of a susceptible plant. For these and similar problems, very long rotation times are necessary. In fact many organic farmers now plant what is coming to be known as sacrificed crop plots to allow bugs and disease a place to exist and even prosper to help prevent development of immunity to bio friendly sprays that are designed to minimize bugs and disease of the productive crops.

Sanitation. Sanitation is important to the control of plant disease. Destruction of weeds or other plants that may serve as over wintering host plants, along with elimination of crop plants that have been diseased, is important. You can even use goats and or geese to help control weeds and they also add natural fertilizers. Careful selection of new plants, seeds or cuttings is important to avoid introduction of diseases into the garden or landscape.

Protection. In some cases, careful selection of disease-free seed and propagating material helps disease control by avoiding introduction. Certified seed potatoes are a good example of a case where the use of disease-free seed pieces keeps the soil clean and protects against inoculating the field with soil diseases.

Following are practices that can help control plant diseases:

 

1. Use disease-resistant varieties whenever they are available, as well as varieties suited to the local growing conditions.

2. Select garden locations with good soil drainage, adequate sunlight, and good soil.

3. Improve the soil using worms, organic matter to develop the best soil tilth for growing seeds and plants.

4. Rotate the garden locations. If the garden space is too limited for garden rotation, rotate crops within the space available.

5. Use disease-free transplants and seeds from reputable suppliers. Do not plant more than you can take care of properly.

6. Eliminate weeds around the garden area that may serve to harbor diseases throughout the year.

7. Control insect pests that serve as disease carriers.

8. Pull up and destroy any plants showing diseases, as those caused by viruses, which cannot be controlled. Pull off diseased leaves as soon as you notice them to help slow the spread of leaf spots and other fungus diseases.

9. Spade under or remove and destroy crop residue as soon as harvest is completed if disease was a problem during the season.

10. Do not overcrowd plants. Overcrowding prevents good air movement and exposure to adequate sunlight. High humidity and too much shade caused by these conditions can increase the development of some diseases.

 

Controlling insects

At one time, gardens had few insect problems. The current movement of people over long distances has helped move pests to areas where they were once unknown or uncommon. Many more problems that need control face the modern gardener.

Many common insect pests can be controlled with modern chemicals. In avoiding their use, however, you must be willing to work a little harder and accept some insect damage in your garden. Following are a few techniques that can help control insect attack and spread. Some of these are the same as those used to control disease:

 

·        Since you will not be able to avoid all insect damage, plant more of a crop for adequate harvest.

·        Check crops often and hand pick any insects present before they become too numerous.

·        Encourage natural insect predators when possible.

·        Although not common, some plants have insect resistance. Select them when available.

·        Do not plant crops in large blocks. Mixing different types of plants helps slow the spread of insects that are present.

·        The concept of trap crops may also help. These are less desirable crops planted near the garden. The hope is that insects will be attracted to and consume these crops more than the desirable ones.

·        Supplement mechanical controls with biological and natural pesticides. These include dormant oils, lime-sulfur, elemental sulfur, pyrethrins, rotenone and nicotine. Use these materials carefully, according to directions of the manufacturer.

·        Fertilize, cultivate and water to promote vigorous growth. Healthy plants seem less attractive to insects, and those that are attacked are better able to survive and still produce a crop.

·        Rotate the crop. Some insects may over winter in the soil or other debris. Moving the crop may delay their attack in spring.

·        Use transplants when possible. These develop more quickly than seeds in the garden. The quicker you can grow and harvest the crop, the less chance of insect pests seriously damaging the plants.

·        Destroy any garden debris or nearby weeds that may serve as breeding or over wintering places for insects.

·        fall cultivate the garden. This buries deeply or exposes some insects and insect eggs to birds or to desiccation during winter freezing and thawing.

·        Keep the garden free of weeds that may harbor pests.

 

Biological control of insect pests

The biological control of insect pests refers to the use of disease organisms, predacious or parasitic insects, insect-feeding birds, toads and other animals.

When these are used, a certain amount of damage must also be expected, as these predators are not always present at the time the insects are numerous, and their increase in numbers usually follows an increase in the pests. Releasing pests (such as ladybugs) and predators has been successful in some areas. One of the most successful biological controls has been the use of bacteria, bacillus thuriengensis, for control of cabbage loopers and cabbageworms in cabbage crops.

Remember that when any kind of insect predator is released in the garden, the pests must already be present to serve for food. If insects are not present, the predators will move elsewhere looking for food.

Soap as an insecticide. Some people suggest that soap is effective as an insecticide. This recommendation dates back to the 1700s. Modern soaps vary widely, and their effectiveness as an insecticide also varies and is sometimes questionable. It seems that the most effective soap for an insecticide is the old-fashioned homemade soap prepared from waste lard, tallow, lye and water. If there is any benefit from these materials, remember that it comes from some of the more caustic soaps, not detergents.

Growing earthworms

Chapter 7

Growing earthworms is a good wholesome healthy activity that will not only save the environment, but will also help decrease stress. Worms are so wonderful... they live with this simple purpose in mind - to eat compost, excrete their castings, and reproduce themselves by the thousands.

How are worms beneficial?

 

Volumes of material have been written on the subject; earthworms are the unheralded soldiers of the soil. Among the primary benefits of having earthworms in the soil are: they aerate it, break it up for easier access by plant roots, help the soil hold more water, clean up dead organic matter by eating it and turning it into the world's best plant food, (whether natural or chemical), they contain 60% protein and are raised as a very high grade animal feed and much more. Then again, let us not forget, they make a lot of fishermen happy.

 

How much garbage can a worm eat?

 

Generally speaking, 2 lbs. of earthworms will recycle 1 lb. of organic waste in 24 hours. In absolutely ideal conditions of comfort and ground up, moist food, the herd will recycle their own weight in wastes every 24 hours.

 

What do earthworms eat?

 

Earthworms can be fed all forms of food waste, yard & garden waste, (plant and root material are OK but not too much dirt), paper and cardboard too wet to recycle otherwise, etc. Don't worry about how nasty some waste matter may seem to be, the earthworms have strange tastes. In fact, they are at their highest level of activity, consuming and procreating with glee when recycling cow manure or human sewage sludge.

 

What should not be fed to earthworms?

 

Do not feed them; metals, foils, plastics, chemicals, oils, solvents, insecticides, soaps, paint, etc. Avoid all citrus products (oranges, lemons, limes, grapefruit), onions, garlic cloves, extremely hot and heavily spiced foods, and high acid foods. Also, avoid oleanders and other poisonous plants (if you are unsure about a species, ask a nurseryman). Be careful of plants that have been sprayed with insecticide.

 

How do you feed earthworms?

 

The earthworms will need a little help from you in the preparation of some of the materials. Be sure the overall mix, (or any individual waste), is moist, about like a blueberry muffin or sponge cake. Avoid soaking or flooding the food. Most food waste can be put directly onto the worm bed just as it comes from the table. Just scatter it around the top of the bed. Before feeding them, the waste matter can be mixed together or not, whichever is easier for you. Chocolate cake, watermelon and Chinese mustard topped with bread, beef, herring, candy and banana peels make a

Scrumptious meal, for the versatile little creatures. Coffee grounds too, they love the grounds. Grinding (via a blender or food processor) or cutting things up to 1/4" size particles or smaller will speed recycling time by up to 50%. Don't bother to bury the waste since they will come up for it, plus, it is easier for you to see when it is all recycled, and thus, feeding time again. Spread the material around, but not too evenly, leave the little recyclers room to "pull back" from the food when they feel like it. A loose coat of food up to 2" high is OK.

 

How do you harvest castings?

 

With a two bins or single bin "through" system, it is quite easy, you simply take the container with the accumulated castings and pour them into a permanent storage container, directly onto your garden soil, or both. With any other bin, the worm/casting mix must go through a harvester to separate the worms from the castings. There are many types of harvesters from a simple framed piece of 3/16" mesh to motorized, drum type, large volume harvesters. For residential use, a hand held mesh frame should suffice.

 

What kind of bedding is needed for startup?

 

Bedding material for startup and future re-starts can be; Canadian peat moss, soaked in water at least 24 hours, (US peat is too tough & stringy), yard clippings, dead leaves, wood shavings, newspaper (torn up and soaked in water). Garden clippings should have "aged" beyond the green stage. Any moistened organic material can be used for bedding. If you look around, there is usually plenty nearby, inside or outside of your house.

 

If I want to use manure for bedding, where can I get it?

 

Many people live within a short driving distance from one type of livestock operation or another. Most rabbit, horse, cattle, ostrich, etc. farmers will make some sort of beneficial deal to get rid of their manure. Payment by you, if required, has to be substantially lower than bagged manure at the nursery. Many farmers will let you haul it off just to get rid of it.

Don't use green manure for bedding, it has to be dried and composted. A few months in the outdoors usually is sufficient. This goes for any pet poop as well. However, small amounts of green poop can be placed on top of the worm bed if there is plenty of room around it for the earthworms to escape the heat of decomposition. The earthworms will nibble at the edges of the pile where the heat is low, thereby reducing the amount of material daily.

What conditions make for a good quality of life for earthworms?

 

Keep them at 55 to 70 deg. F., w/65 deg. being a good average temperature of the bedding. Mean humidity should be 55%, and keep the earthworms out of the rain. They will drown and/ or scatter all over under rainy or very humid conditions. Finally, the pH of the bed should be as close to 6.5 as possible, with 7.0 and 6.0 being the upper & lower pH limits.

 

What happens if I order my starter, (or add-on) quantity of worms by mail and they arrive dead?

 

Write or phone your dealer right away. A reputable producer will replace the stock without question. If, however, the same customer, (out of dozens with no complaints), says that his worms arrive dead, time after time, most dealers will ask that the batch be returned for inspection.

 

Will the earthworm bin smell up the basement, garage, or storage shed?

 

Surprisingly, there is no odor from the worm beds in spite of the highly odoriferous feed they receive. A handful of earthworm compost held close to the nose smells like rich, loamy, topsoil.

 

How do you clean that black stuff, (castings), off your hands?

 

Fresh earthworm castings have a unique clinging characteristic. However, any good hand cleaner, including soap and warm water, will take it off. Light use of a soft scrub brush will speed up the process.

 

How hard is worm farming?

 

Not at all hard especially as a small, residential sized bin for recycling kitchen waste. An average of 5 to 10 minutes a day will do it. Obviously, the larger the worm farm the more work involved. Nevertheless, one person can successfully manage quite a large number of worms, up to at least 3,000,000. With larger farms your level of technology and equipment will make a big difference.

As earthworms tunnel through the soil, they ingest the soil and digest any organic matter in it. Organic matter is dragged into their burrows and is broken down. Although they are the most numerous in the top 6 inches, they also work in the subsoil, bringing mineral rich soil from below to the surface. This adds to the supply of nutrients available to the plants. Research shows that in 100 sq. ft of garden soil, earthworms may bring from 4-8 lbs of dirt to the soil surface each year.

Besides incorporating organic matter to your soil, earthworms are good manufacturers of fertilizer. Castings have a nutrient level and organic matter level much higher than that of the surrounding soil. Each day they produce nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium and many micronutrients in a form that all plants can use. For example, a 200 sq. ft garden with a low worm population of only 5-worms/cubic foot will be provided with over 35 lbs (about 1/3 lb per worm) of top-grade fertilizer by the worms, each garden year.

Not only do they produce this fertilizer but spread it thoroughly within the top 12 inches of soil. They may also incorporate it as far down as 6 ft. A soil that is well-managed, rich in humus may easily support 25 worms per cubic foot, which translates into at least 175 lbs of fertilizer per year for the same 200 sq. ft garden.

This means that your garden or lawn can be supplied with far more fertilizer and that of superior quality than a dry or granular fast-acting chemical fertilizer of 10-20 lbs. In fact, these fertilizers may even repel the earthworms that are present.

 

As the fertilizers become soluble, they may leach down into the soil and force the earthworms to seek refuge elsewhere and may pollute the ground water.

Worms make other contributions, such as adding calcium carbonate, a compound that helps moderate soil pH. Overtime earthworms can help change acid or alkaline soils toward a more neutral pH.

Earthworm tunnels help to aerate and loosen the soil. This allows more oxygen in, which not only helps the plant directly, but also improves conditions for certain beneficial soil bacteria. Finally, the tunneling of the earthworms provide an access to deeper soil levels for the numerous smaller organisms that contribute to the health of the soil and the health of the plant life and ultimately our health.

 

In summary, earthworm activity in your soil is beneficial and should be encouraged. They help incorporate organic matter, improve the soil structure, improve water movement through the soil, improve plant root growth and minimize thatch build up in lawns.

 

Control

 

Since earthworms are beneficial, control measures are not required. Break up the mounds of soil in your garden with a rake. To prevent them from entering containers in or on the ground, place a piece of screen over the drainage hole. Setting the containers on a layer of gravel or cinders also keeps earthworms from entering containers since they will not move through such a coarse layer.

You may want to add earthworms to your soil and would need the variety Lumbricus terrestris, which will survive in garden soil. Others, which are sold commercially, are adapted to live in the heat of a compost pile and will die if left in the garden. When adding new worms, distribute them around the garden so that there are only a few per sq. ft. Dried leaves, grass, hay, household garbage and other organic materials are their favorite food and need only to be spread on the surface. Earthworms will come to the surface to eat when it is dark or for best production cover worm beds with black plastic. They do the rest!

To better control the earthworms and to help protect against frost you can make raised beds from cinder blocks, adobe blocks, railroad ties, etc. Dig down about 6 inches or more and lay the blocks on top at ground level around the edge of whatever size whole you dug. Lay window screen in the bottom so the worms can’t get away and protects them from the critters and add mulch (peat moss etc.) than the

worms and then the waste food. Presto you’ll soon have worms, castings and veggies in abundance. Once you have your first earthworm bed you can start the next bed with the over flow from the first bed. You can feed say a rabbit in a cage and feed the rabbit the leaves and fruit from what grows under it. The rabbit droppings feed the worms and the casting feed the plants. This becomes a closed loop eco system, self sustaining and perpetual. And you can develop it to whatever size you like. As gardeners we have all come to love the earthworm and want our soil to hold as many as possible. I'm a firm believer that understanding the earthworm means we can understand how to help keep them. There are over 3,000 species of earthworms, but only a half dozen or so are important to cultivation. If you dig in most garden soils, you are likely to find three different types of worms. The canonical night crawler, the common field worm and the green worm. The new world did not have any of these worms before the Europeans. The worms were inadvertently brought over in pots and spread throughout the Northern American soil. We often think that foreign fauna as bad, witness the Japanese beetle or Gypsy moth; but the earthworm is an import, that without, our soils and gardens would be so much poorer.

 

The night crawler, _Lumbricus terrestis_, is the largest and likes soils that are heavy in organic matter like lawns and meadows. When the soil becomes poorer, the common field worm, _Allolobophora caliginosa_, and all its variants become more common. This is a smaller worm with a pronounced raised band, called the clitellum, about 1/4 of the way down its body. The last common worm is called the green worm, _Allolobophora chlorotica_, which is a stout greenish colored worm that is quite dormant and does little to improve the soil.

The rabbits, the worms, the castings and the veggies all can be sold. A good winter crop that works well with this system is Elephant Garlic and Chinese cabbage.

The very active red wriggler, or manure worm, can be found in compost piles. You know you have a red wiggler when you pick it up: it thrashes about, wiggling and squirming. The true red wiggler, _Eisenia foetida_, has alternating bands of yellow and maroon down the length of its body. A similar worm, _Lumbricus rubellus_, is a deep maroon color without the yellow bands.

These manure worms need extremely high organic matter, such as manure or rich kitchen scraps to survive. Manure worms just cannot live in common garden or lawn soil. (Unless the soil is very rich.) So when you shovel your red wigglers from your compost pile into the garden, you are dooming these guys to provide nitrogen for your plants by their bodies.

But the life of an earthworm in general is hard. Their bodies are about 70% protein; rich food for many predators. Their major enemies are insect eating birds, like robins, and mammals like moles. If you watch a robin hunting, it pauses, cocks it head and then hops. The robin’s ears can actually hear the earthworm moving under ground. But the earthworm, although sightless and ear-less can feel the vibrations of the bird on the surface. It’s the deadly game of survival.

Another major earthworm predator is the mole. This voracious insect predator loves to dine on white grubs and any earthworm it can find. Grubs, attached to the root from which they gain their food, can't escape, but the earthworm can feel the vibrations of the mole digging and quickly try

too flee. The mole's own digging conceals the noise of the earthworm fleeing, so the star nose mole developed a

unique method to find earthworms. It uses its funny looking nose to detect the faint electrical fields that earthworms (and some other insects) radiate. Not only does this

mole detects and finds an earthworm, but it knows how to bite it so it is paralyzed but does not die. The mole stores the living worm along the burrow as food for dining at leisure. Another predator, usually not found in the garden, is a carnivorous snail. These snails are long and thin, just right for invading the shell of another snail and devouring it. But they also love earthworms.

Some earthworms, like night crawlers, have 5 hearts. If chopped in half, they don't die but try to regenerate; however, sometimes a half gets confused and it end up regenerating a worm with two heads or two tails.

Earthworms can freeze solid and still live if the freeze is slow and they do not thaw out and refreeze often. Any form of ground cover, cover crops, leaves, mulch or even boards help mediate the freezing and allow more earthworms to survive the winter. Fields that are plowed and left bare are almost devoid of earthworms in the spring. Luckily, earthworms have a high K (reproduction) factor.

Earthworms are hermaphrodites with both male and female organs. They mate by lying head to tail with each worm producing a temporary skin canal through which

the sperm flows into each other to be stored in a sperm sack. The girdle like ring around the front of an earthworm, called the clitellum, later slides along the worm and picks up the mature eggs and sperm. It falls off the worm and the combination tube, egg, sperm and mucous form a well-protected nest for the worm eggs.

One of the major myths, reported by many otherwise informed authors, is that earthworms come out of their burrows during a rain to avoid drowning. Worms have no lungs; they take their oxygen directly thorough the skin, either from air or from water. In fact, rather then fear water, they love it. Its drying out they fear and dry soil kills them. When it rains, they come to the surface because it’s easier to find a mate in the flat open ground then in the three-dimensional burrows. The wet ground allows them to move without fear of drying out. To an earthworm, the wet ground is a wild singles bar.

Earthworms use lots of water since they produce 60% of their body weight in urine every day. Urea is very high in nitrogen and provides an excellent fertilizer. The worms in a field easily produce about 50 lbs nitrogen/acre, which is the same amount of nitrogen that a crop of hay takes out of an acre! The earthworm casts of contain concentrated nitrate, phosphorous, exchangeable magnesium, potassium and calcium, all essential to plant growth. The organic material bound to earthworms and other soil dwellers is about 1 ton/acre, which is released gradually as they die in the dry summer, providing a great nutrient reservoir for our plants.

Buy a drip system and an automatic timer. Need to eliminate some grasshoppers and other ban insects buy ladybugs praying mantis and other good insects that eat the bad insects. Plant marigolds, onions and garlic borders. Buy some earthworms you can find them in any good garden book or magazine and order through the mail the amount you need to get started. And than you must provide conditions for the worms to flourish.

 

Earthworm populations are limited by the amount of organic matter, water and survival over the winter. To grow a good earthworm crop, feed the soil. The ultimate factor limiting worm population is usually food and water! Night crawlers have been kept alive for 10 years but in the garden their life span is usually no more then one year, maybe two. Its necessary to insure the eggs and young survive the winters.

That's what organic gardening always comes back to: feeding the soil and the rest takes care of itself. Earthworms need organic debris and mineral soil for food. The use of artificial fertilizers, be they chemical or organic, do not provide the necessary food for earthworms. Neither does dry leaves. Before they fall, the tree sucks out all the essential chemicals it can and leaves a leaf that has almost no nitrogen in it, at least, not enough for the earthworm to eat and survive. Grass clipping, corn stalks, green leaves, garden waste, field gleanings, restaurant and food market waste, household table garbage and just about anything else, provide good sources.

So when you dig up a worm, realize it is all part of a wonderful cycle, its life improves the soil, its wastes add great fertilizer, and even in death, the worm bodies contribute its nitrogen at a time with nitrogen may be becoming scare. The lowly earthworm can solve individual’s home sewage and even cities human sewage waste problems by reducing it to feeds and castings for natural plant fertilizer and/or animal and fish food

In 1932 Otto Warburg won the Nobel Prize in Medicine for his discovery that cancer was anaerobic: cancer occurs in the absence of free oxygen  As innocuous as this discovery might seem, it is actually a startling and significant finding worthy of a Nobel Prize. What it basically means is that cancer is caused by a lack of free oxygen in the body and therefore, whatever causes this to occur is the cause of all cancers.

In chemistry, alkali solutions  (pH over 7.0) tend to absorb oxygen, while acids  (pH under 7.0) tend to expel oxygen.  For example, a mild alkali can absorb over 100 times as much oxygen as a mild acid.  Therefore, when the body becomes acidic by dropping below pH 7.0 (note: all body fluids, except for stomach and urine, are supposed to be mildly alkaline at pH 7.4), oxygen is driven out of the body thereby, according to Nobel Prize winner Otto Warburg, inducing cancer.  Stomach fluids must remain acidic to digest food and urine must remain acidic to remove wastes from the body.  Blood is the exception.  Blood must always remain at an alkaline pH 7.4 so that it can retain its oxygen.  When adequate mineral consumption is in the diet, the blood is supplied the crucial minerals required to maintain an alkaline pH of 7.4.  However when insufficient mineral consumption is in the diet, the body is forced to rob Peter (other body fluids) to pay Paul (the blood).  In doing so, it removes crucial minerals, such as calcium, from the saliva, spinal fluids, kidneys, liver, etc., in order to maintain the blood at pH 7.4.  This causes the demineralized fluids and organs to become acidic and therefore anaerobic, thus inducing not only cancer, but a host of other degenerative diseases, such as heart disease, diabetes, arthritis, lupus, etc..

Everyone knows that the human body is made up of 78% water by weight, and that water is hydrogen and oxygen gases. When nitrogen gas and carbon in the form of carbon dioxide and methane gases are added, the total gas in the body by weight becomes over 95%. Almost half of the remaining 5% that makes up the human body and controls all biological functions is the mineral calcium.

This information then begs the question,  “How much calcium is necessary ?”  The answer can readily be determined by examining the diet of millions of people around the world who consume over 100 times our Recommended Daily Allowance, RDA, and who suffer the side effects of living 40 years longer than we do, of aging at half the rate that we do, and of being devoid of cancer, heart disease, mental disorders, diabetes, arthritis and all other degenerative diseases. Almost all of these people, the Armenians, Azerbaijans and Georgians in Russian, the Tibetans, the Hunzas of Northern Pakistan, the Vilcabamba Indians in Ecuador, the Bamas in China and the Titicacas in Peru  live at high altitudes above 8000 feet.  Their only source of water is melting glaciers, and the glacial water is so turbid and white with ground up rock that all of these cultures call the water “milk of the mountains”.  Each quart of this water contains over 17,000 milligrams of calcium along with other minerals and 60 trace metals.  These cultures drink several quarts each day and the water fertilized crops are also loaded with calcium and other nutrients.  The only long living and disease free culture that does not live above an altitude of 8000 feet, is the Okinawan’s.

Millions of Okinawans live in the southern coral islands of Japan with the average life expectancy of 105 years, while mainland Japan is just 77 years.  The Okinawans live on islands made of coral reefs which are mainly calcium. The Okinawans discovered over 500 years ago that feeding coral sand that is produced from the weathering of the reefs to the chickens and cows results in twice as many eggs and twice as much milk.  They also found that when the coral sand is used as a fertilizer, crops increase by as much as three fold.  When they finally, 500 years ago, began to consume the coral sand themselves, all of the under utilized doctors were forced to leave the islands.  This was known in Japanese history as the Japanese Exodus.

The early European explorers discovered their secret and hauled shiploads of the calcium rich coral sands back to Europe.  In Madrid Spain, the historic monument of the world’s first drugstore contains rows of shelves labeled “coral calcium from Okinawa Japan”.  Today millions of people all over the world consume coral calcium, and as a result, there are millions of medical testimonials.

The phenomenon of preventing and reversing degenerative disease through the consumption of large amounts of mineral and vitamins did not go un-noticed by men of medicine.  Hundreds of years ago European doctors were prescribing coral calcium and other nutrients to their patients. 

In the 1950s, Dr. Carl Reich M.D. discovered that his patients were able to “cure themselves” of almost all degenerative diseases by consuming several times the RDA of calcium, magnesium, vitamin-D and other nutrients. Dr. Reich was the first North American doctor to prescribe “mega doses” of minerals and vitamins to his patients and  is considered by many to be the father of preventive medicine.  By the 1980s Dr. Reich had cured thousands, but lost his license for explaining that the consumption of mineral nutrients, such as calcium, could prevent cancer and a host of other diseases. In the October 13, 1998 issue of the New York Times wrote an article appeared entitled “Calcium Takes Its Place As a Superstar of Nutrients” in which it reports that a study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association reported that “increasing calcium induced normal development of the epithelia cells and might also prevent cancer in such organs as the breast, prostate and pancreas”.  It also reported that the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition published “virtually no major organ system escapes calcium’s influence” and that a research team from the University of Southern California found “adding calcium to the diet lowered the blood pressure in 110 black teenagers”

The January 14, 1999 issue of the Phoenix Republic wrote in an article entitled “Calcium Reduces Tumors” that the New England Journal of Medicine reported “adding calcium to the diet can keep you from getting tumors in your large intestine”.  Then the February, 1999 issue of the Readers Digest wrote in an article entitled “The ‘Superstar’ Nutrient” that the Journal of the American Medical published “when the participants consumption reached 1500 milligrams of calcium a day, cell growth  in the colon improved toward normal (this means that the cancer was reversed)”.  The Digest also reported that the Metabolic Bone Center at St. Lukes Hospital believes that “a chronic deficiency of calcium is largely responsible for premenstrual syndrome (PMS)” and that “a lot of women are avoiding the sun and their vitamin-D levels may be very low”.  In the same article, the Digest reported that “in 1997 the large federally financed trial found that a diet containing 1200 milligrams of calcium significantly lowered blood pressure in adults”. Then the May 3, 1999 edition of US  World News Report wrote in an article entitled “Calcium’s Powerful Mysterious Ways”,  that, “Researchers  are increasingly finding that the humble mineral calcium plays a major role in warding off major illnesses from high blood pressure to colon cancer”  and that “You name the disease, and calcium is beginning to have a place there” (David McCarron, a nephrologist at Oregon Health Sciences University).  Unfortunately, most doctors have not heard the news that their own journals and major newspapers and magazines are reporting that natural supplements, especially calcium, can cure and prevent disease. 

The scientific evidence that calcium is the key to good and long health is overwhelming.  One does not have to be a rocket scientist to read simple articles in reputable newspapers, magazines and the doctor’s own journals that are all saying that disease can be cured by diet.  Also one can simply look at the millions of people around the world that never get sick and say, “We also want to drink some milk of the mountains”.  Unfortunately, all of the milk of the mountains is consumed as fast as it is produced.  However, the Japanese could possibly cure the world with their “milk of the oceans” known as coral calcium, the calcium factor of good health.

Honey Bee Pollen

Bee Pollen contains the male gametes of plants found as small dust particles in the stamen of flowers. Every variety of flower in the world puts forth a dusting of pollen. Many orchard fruits, especially the lemon, produce excellent bee pollen. Once a honeybee arrives at a flower, it settles in and begins to scrape off the powdery loose pollen from the stamen with her jaws and front legs. She mixes a dab of honey and her saliva to moisten the mixture. Now it is ready to be placed in the pollen baskets located on her thick hind legs. It is gathered from pollen ladden bees with a special device placed at the entrance of the hive. This device brushes the material from the hind legs of the bee. These granules of bee pollen fall to the bottom of the hive where they are harvested by beekeepers.

Honeybee pollen is considered by many nutritionists to be nature’s perfect food. It is the food of the young bee. It contains enzymes, vitamins, hormones, amino acids, etc. In fact, it contains a greater variety nutrients than any other food on the planet. Bee pollen is a rich storehouse of B vitamins. It also contains vitamins A, C, D, and E. Bee pollen is made of approximately 55% carbohydrates and 35% protein, 2% fatty acids and a host of enzymes. The United States Department of Agriculture published an extensive article concerning bee pollen and its fight against cancer. That article appeared in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute in October of 1948. It concerned an experiment done with mice. These mice were bred to develop cancer at 31 weeks of age. However, when a study group of these mice were given a daily dose of bee pollen the development of cancer did not occur until 41 weeks of age. In some cases, no cancer was evident at all, even after 60 weeks. The discovery was startling because all of the mice that were not given the bee pollen all developed cancer when they were supposed to. This experiment was very important because the prolonging of the tumors in the mice was directly connected to the administration of the bee pollen. All other factors were constant in the study. As ground breaking as this study was, nothing ever came from it. 

In other studies undertaken in Europe, human subjects have recorded an increase in the level of blood lymphocytes, gamma globulin and protein in those given pollen in comparison with control groups. The most significant area of increase occurs in the lymphocytes, thus strengthening the immune system. Lymphocytes are the soldiers of the immune system. Their function is to rid the body of harmful substances, diseased or infected cells, cancerous cells, viruses, metabolic wastes, etc. The increase of gamma globulin also helps the immune system because it is this protein that enhances our ability to resist infection.

                                            DMSO and MSM

Chapter 10      

       DMSO (dimethyl sulfoxide) and MSM are extremely beneficial to maintenance of great health. Many thousands of articles, papers and studies have been done showing the amazing properties of these naturally occurring compounds. DMSO is one of the most misunderstood pharmaceutical agents of our time. It's metabolite MSM is made by adding another oxygen atom. and then it becomes DMSO2. Both are produced by a continuous cycle in nature. They also can be produced by man made extraction and processing.

In nature, the cycle starts in the ocean, where microscopic plankton release sulfur compounds called dimethylsulfonium salts are transformed into a very volatile compound called DMS (dimethylsulfide). DMS is hydrophobic, escapes as a gas, and rises into the upper atmosphere. When exposed to ozone and ultraviolet light, a chemical reaction takes place and the DMS converts to DMSO and MSM. Both molecules are soluble in water and return to the surface as rain water. Plants and trees take up the two compounds and concentrate them in there structures. Eventually they are mineralized and they are transported back to the ocean where the sulfur cycle starts again.

When DMSO is made by manmade techniques it is produced as a byproduct of paper pulp. It is extracted from the pulp by adding sulfuric acid. It can be refined into a commercial solvent and pharmaceutical grade of 99.9% pure DMSO. MSM is made by simply boiling DMSO. Consequently both compounds are available in ample quantities for use with human beings as well as animals.

DMSO is considered the most persecuted substance of our time. It was discovered in the 1800's and has been used as a solvent as well as for medicinal purposes by doctors and veterinarians. A New York Times editorial on April 3, 1963 called DMSO the closest thing to a wonder drug known to man. Much publicity and controversy about DMSO was generated during the sixties and seventies. In 1980, Mike Wallace of 60 Minutes did two programs concerning DMSO. This drug was briefly glorified as a panacea for ailments of man and beast and then was banished by the FDA as dangerous and without merit. Although pharmaceutical companies have submitted drug applications to the FDA, they have all been rejected. The only DMSO use approved by the FDA is for preserving organs for transplantation and for a painful bladder infection called interstitial cystitis. Besides these uses, Doctors are not legally able to prescribe it for any other condition affecting people. However it is available as a a prescription drug in Europe, Japan and other countries.

The leading proponent of widespread use of DMSO is Dr. Stanley Jacob from the University of Oregon Medical School. He has done countless studies on the effectiveness of DMSO to dissolve blood clots, alleviate pains from burns, reduce intracranial swelling, dissolve calcification in joints, reduce swelling in sprains, alleviate tendonitis as well many other uses.

DMSO is a clear liquid and can enter the body via the skin, orally or through an I.V. It rapidly enter the blood stream and its molecular shape allows it to penetrate the cells and clean them of toxins. This mechanism possibly explains much of its versatility. God gave man everything he needed in the Garden of Eden. He gave us the "tree juice" as the late Pat McGrady called it. His book called The Persecuted Drug-The story of DMSO makes for great reading about this miraculous substance. If only the government (FDA) would get out of the way of doctors being able to prescribe this natural substance many lives would be greatly benefited.

Probably the most important property of DMSO is its ability to dissolve clots that cause a stroke. Strokes are the third biggest killer in the U.S. It is estimated that over 150,000 deaths a year are attributed to strokes and an additional 3,000,000 people are disabled. Dr. Stanley Jacob believes that stroke victims should be administered DMSO because this powerful solvent can dissolve the clot, thus restoring circulation and the risk of paralysis. Dr. Jacobs believes that it is best to administer DMSO within the first few hours of a stroke and intravenously is best, however orally is very effective too. Once DMSO gets into the body it enters the bloodstream and crosses the blood-brain barrier. It's molecular structure is so small that it can easily slip on through. It has been documented to effectively dissolve clots in stoke victims. In Oregon, one such man recovered from a stoke within a twenty-four hour period. He first had the symptoms of a stroke at 7:30 AM and he refused to go to the hospital until after his wife had spoken to Dr. Jacobs and this did not happen till 6:30 PM. At 7PM she began to administer to him a teaspoon of 50% DMSO along with some orange juice. She did this every 15 minutes for the first two hours. Then for the next two hours the same dosage was used at half hour intervals. The next day this stroke victim was recovered. This story can be documented by reading the different stories written about in Dan Haley's book called the Politics In Healing. It makes for a convincing argument for every home in America to have a bottle of DMSO in the medicine cabinet in case of stroke. Make sure that it is pharmaceutical grade DMSO because commercial grade has preservatives in it.

Human Growth Hormone-HGH

Chapter 11   

Since the dawn of civilization mankind has been in search for the fountain of youth. There have been countless claims on that special elixir but they all fall short of the claim of keeping age in check.  Scientists have been able to successfully locate the hormone that regulates the aging of the human body. It is called Human Growth Hormone or HGH. It is produced in the anterior pituitary gland deep within the brain. The scientific name for HGH is somatotropin. It is a single chain polypeptide comprised of 191 amino acids. This hormone is continually secreted throughout life and it regulates a host of body and cellular functions. During childhood it is secreted in large amounts, peaking during puberty and the teenage years. There is a dramatic decrease in its release from the pituitary gland when the long bones have finished growing. It is not the production of HGH that is slowing as we age; rather it is the release of it from the pituitary gland.

     We know the pituitary gland holds an ample supply of HGH, in fact it does not nearly release its full contents in any given twenty four-hour period. The pituitary gland receives its instructions from the master gland in the brain called the hypothalamus. The hypothalamus is the master regulator of the body and it is able to detect subtle chemical changes and send signals to other glands to regulate body functions. It instructs the pituitary gland to either increase or decrease its production of somatotropin. Naturally as we age, the release of HGH lessens and consequently we experience the symptoms of aging. A twenty year old person might be releasing twice the amount of HGH as a 40 year old, and four times as much HGH as a sixty year old person.

 Scientists have concluded that if the release of HGH could be maintained at youthful levels that many of the effects of aging could be considerably slowed. There are synthetic derivatives of HGH that are available and in fact for many years, doctors have been administering injections of this drug. There have been some phenomenal results from this hormone booster, however there are proven side effects and for most people it is cost prohibited. Pharmaceutical companies are heavily into this field and they have and are developing precursor-type compounds that raise the HGH levels of the body. These of course are drugs and they carry the risk of unhealthy side effect and are costly

On the other side of the equation is the concept of naturally stimulating the pituitary to secrete HGH. Many experts in the field of life extension believe that this is the superior way. This natural way incorporates using nutrient blends or food supplements, plus exercise to accomplish the release of additional HGH.

HGH is converted in the liver to a metabolite called Insulin-like Growth Factor Type 1 (IGF-1). It is secreted from the pituitary gland during sleep, especially in the slow wave period of Delta. This is why sleep is so important. Not only are the batteries being recharged, the processes of aging are being arrested, during restful sleep. IGF-1 is responsible for the variety of bodily functions associated with HGH. Its concentration in the blood is directly correlated to the amount of HGH that has been secreted by the pituitary gland. Thus low levels of IGF-1 equate to low levels of HGH and consequently the increase of symptoms associated with aging. It does not take a large increase in IGF-1 to have positive effects on the body. Clinical studies reveal that elevating HGH levels can add lean muscle mass, increase bone density, decrease body fat, restore hair color, improve skin elasticity, boost energy levels and improve sexual functions. It also speeds the recovery time of healing and significantly improves the immune system. Increasing production of HGH virtually improves every condition of the body to offset the assault of the aging process.

HGH was first isolated as a compound in the 1950’s, however scientists were unable to synthesize the hormone until 1972. It was not until the 1980’s that synthetic HGH could be made in large quantities in the laboratory. This in part was due to the advances in DNA research and technology. In the late eighties the FDA authorized the use of synthetic HGH for human consumption and experimentation.

A groundbreaking article was published in the New England Journal of Medicine in July 1990. Daniel Rudman, M.D. of the Medical College of Wisconsin, Milwaukee, authored the medical paper. The premise that he put forth was that if hormone levels control the aging process, then replacing them should significantly reverse the symptoms of aging. Doctor Rudman theorized that the onset of reduced hormone production (release) becomes apparent by age thirty-five and it is this age that marks the beginning of many symptoms associated with the aging process. He hypothesized that by increasing HGH levels in the body that all other hormone production levels would also rise. Consequently, symptoms of the aging process could theoretically be reversed.

He and his colleagues conducted a study with twelve men whose ages ranged from 61 to 81. This study also had a control group where men were given a placebo and all other factors of the experiment were constant. The volunteer subjects were given synthetic HGH three times a week for six months and samples of their blood were taken to measure the levels of IGF-1 (insulin growth factor). As mentioned earlier it is the level of IGF-1 that is circulating in the blood that determines how much HGH has been secreted by the pituitary. IGF-1 concentrations in the blood are related to the production of other hormones that ultimately affect function of the cells of the entire body. The men given the HGH replacement therapy had the levels of IGF-1 return to levels only seen in younger men.

At the beginning of the study, the men had the classic symptoms of aging. However, after the administration of the HGH significant changes were readily seen. Although the group did not change any diet or exercise habits, they experienced remarkable improvements in their physical stature. There was seen a significant increase in lean muscle mass as well as a decrease in body fat. Localized bone density, firmer skin and improved texture, as well as added hair pigmentation all was evident in the men. Essentially the biological age reversal that was experienced by this study group was between 10 and 20 years. On the surface, this seems impossible, but there was a team of doctors and colleagues that supervised the study.  The findings shocked the medical community but more importantly, scientists grabbed the ball and ran with the idea of unlocking the secret of slowing the aging process. Their discoveries would lead to additional studies on the effects on HGH replacement therapy and how it could benefit the elderly.

Trees are one of the most important things to life. Trees are life itself, man can not exist without them. Trees are just mainly great big tall plants. Trees provide the oxygen we need to breath. Trees take in carbon dioxide and expel pure oxygen back in to the atmosphere, there by cleansing the atmosphere. Trees, many believe are the fastest growing, largest, tallest, and oldest organisms in Earth. Trees are not only the longest lived but the largest organisms on the planet. Consider the fungus Armillaria ostoyae. In forests of Washington state, the underground mycelium of a single genotype of this fungus covers 2.5 square miles. A single clone of , consisting of hundreds of genetically identical stems, covers 106 acres and the above-ground parts weigh over 6,000 tons. These organisms are not single, integrated individuals. Rather, they are organisms that reproduce asexually, producing clones.

Trees produce all the fruit on earth, nuts, maple syrup and rubber for many of our rubber products and lumber for many of our building needs, and pulp for paper. Tree by-products are now being used on commercial-scale crop management, pesticides, and are being feed as animal, fish and foul fed. Patents have been obtained for a technique for using an extract as a fungicide.

Trees also manufacture some of the worlds important known and unknown medicines, Aspirin, Ppycnogenol, DMSO, Ginkgo Biloba , and many other voluble compounds. Trees even increase rainfall. Other factors that cause rain are for the most part are the great currents of warm and cold water in the ocean, the presence or absence of mountain ranges, and the direction of the prevailing winds.

Forests do affect rainfall, owing to their colder and moister air and the resistance which they offer to the movement of the winds. Forest air, when sufficiently moist and sufficiently cool, will precipitate its moisture as rain, or coming in contact with warmer, moisture-laden winds will cause this moisture to fall as rain. The forest in checking moisture-laden winds is similar to mountain ranges, with their warm, moist winds striking a mountain are forced up the incline and, owing to the fact that air expands as it rises, are thereby cooled and so cause rainfall.

But when it comes to overall climate of a given region, trees play even a more important roll. Forest fires even create their own wind storms called fire storms.

After the rain has fallen, the tree's leaves, the mold and the undergrowth that make up the forest floor, hold rainfall. and even more of this rainfall is held in the water reservoir cells and is then returned to the springs, creeks, rivers, lakes and then on to the oceans.

Mahatma Gandhi, was known to be a firm believer in the goodness of trees. Dr Ekaid, in reply to some queries about Neem tree and it’s leaves by Gandhi, wrote. "We have made experiments upon neem leaves in our laboratory which revealed that its leaves contain more nutritious elements than any other similar vegetation which had been subjected to chemical analysis earlier". The prayer meetings at the Sabarmati Ashram were conducted under a Neem tree by the Mahatma Gandhi and a Neem leaf chutney was a part of his everyday diet. (Dr. Shiva 1993)

Medical properties of Neem have been known to Indians since time immemorial. The earliest Sanskrit medical writings refer to the benefits of Neem's fruits, seeds, oil, leaves, roots and barks.

Nimibidin found in neem bark is now known to be antipyretic and non-irritant, and it has found to be effective in treatment of skin diseases such as eczema, furunculosis, arsenical dermatitis, burn ulcers, Herpes labialis, scabies and seborrhaeic dermatitis.

 

 

The global crisis caused by deforestation, pasture overgrazing, climate change and loss of biodiversity has gotten worse despite growing awareness of the consequences. The world's forests are disappearing at a rate of more than 100,000 acres every day. In urgent need of hard currency, the developing nations have few restrictions against clear-cutting forests and burning-over cleared land. They find it impossible to make loggers re-plant the lands they clear.

Desperate for more fertile land, families move from their worn out farms into the cleared areas to practice shifting agriculture. Financially strapped governments are unable to send extension workers into these communities to teach environmentally sustainable land management, even if they should happen to have technicians familiar with the concept. So the burning continues and the cycle of land depletion continues. Food production is now in decline. Weather patterns are changing, and both the local and global atmosphere are increasingly polluted.

Because of these factors, soil is eroding, streams are carrying silt that smothers coral reefs, land is turning into desert, habitats are disappearing, many species of plants and animals are becoming extinct, atmospheric carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases are increasing, world temperatures are higher, the ozone layer is thinner, the sea level is rising and fresh water levels are falling and less oxygen is being produced.

The rich web of life, of which we are all a part, depends on a multitude of interactions between plants, animals and the natural resources of the planet. When we lose any part of it, the entire web is negatively affected. How the world's people, industries and governments care for this planet, on which we all depend, can determine our future.

It is essential that worldwide programs be developed to provide technical and planning support for as many communities as possible. Stopping land depletion and human misery in the developing nations should be our goal. is our goal. We can do something about it.

At present there is fierce competition between the powerful forces rushing to harvest the remaining forests and the growing numbers of environmentalists, scientists, local people, and world leaders committed to a viable alternative. They ask, "What kinds of trees?", "Where do we get the seeds?", "How do we plant them?", "How can we benefit from them?". They need answers to these and hundreds of other questions. Water, The Nutrient of Life

Chronic dehydration the lack of water in the body is the root cause of many painful degenerative diseases, such as asthma, allergies, hypertension, over weight and many emotional problems including depression. Water can help to prevent and even reverse premature aging. Water can help to eliminate pains such as back pain, heartburn, arthritis, colitis pain, angina pain and migraine headaches. Water is a natural cure for asthma and can help cure hypertension without medications. Water can help to lose weight effortlessly when in conjunction with The LemonFastTM program. The adult human body is almost 70% water and a daily intake of good drinking water is essential to maintaining proper health. Approximately 75 trillion cells make up the entire body and each one of these cells requires proper hydration. Water makes up about 82% of the composition of blood, 80% of the brain, 70% of the muscles, and 90% of the lungs. When the kidneys are not properly flushed with water renal failure can eventually occur. More importantly, one must understand that the body still needs water and consequently the wastewater of the body is recycled because the cells need it to perform their functions. This is one of the reasons for constipation and excess water retention. The body is very intelligent and when it realizes that it is being deprived of the very element that sustains life, it holds onto every drop that it can. To know that the body has squeezed water from the bowels in order to use this for other important functions is shocking to most people. Instead of reaching for the constipation medication, a liter of water may be the solution to the problem. For those that want to lose weight, it is imperative that they drink at least 64 ounces of water. In fact, for every twenty-five pounds above normal body weight one should increase water consumption by 8 ounces. If intense exercise is undertaken, additional water should also be included. Athletes often times require up to a gallon of water a day during serious workouts.

If the kidneys are not properly hydrated the load is shifted to the liver and as a result, its function of properly metabolizing stored fat is severely affected. Many times, overweight people feel that if they reduce their water intake that they will lose the extra pounds, but this is not the case. Because water intake is dramatically cut, the body must hold on to its water to keep sodium in solution. Thus by not drinking enough water, sodium levels increase and this can lead to high blood pressure. Twenty-four pounds of water is necessary to keep 4 ounces of salt in a saline solution. One can see why many people are bloated and experience water retention. It is important to constantly flush the body with good clean drinking water and many these problems will cease to be a problem.

 

Areas of Water Loss Urination: 4-6 cups Perspiration - 2-4 cups Expiration -  2-4 cups Defecation 2/3–1 cup.

 

The body is designed for survival and therefore it will not give up excess water if it is deprived of continued replenishment. When water becomes scarce, the body tries to limit the amount it loses through breathing, mucous production, urination, perspiration and bowel movements. This leads to constipation, urinary tract infections, dry unproductive coughs, sneezing, sinus pressure, headaches and weight gain

Cold dry air causes further loss of water through respiration. Forced hot air is also a problem for the lungs. The body has to moisturize the air before it reaches the lungs and does so through the mucous membrane lining, nasal passages and bronchi. When available fluid decreases the mucous linings become drier, causing irritation in the lungs. They become more susceptible to dust, mold, particles, cigarette smoke and other irritants. Because of the lack of adequate water, there is less resistance to viral infections, bacteria, dry cough and bronchitis. 

 

Coffee, Teas and Soft Drinks

For every cup of coffee, tea or soft which contains caffeine the body needs additional water to offset the dehydration that occurs. These beverages are diuretics and they deplete the body of necessary water and minerals and vitamins.  Caffeine is a stimulant and causes many changes to occur throughout the body. Most Americans are addicted to this drug and their health therefore is greatly affected. Caffeine stimulates the body because it is foreign to it and the body is activated to remove it as soon as possible. This is why the heart rate increases and the urge to urinate is so strong shortly after consumption of said beverages. It stimulates the adrenal glands to secrete cortisol, a powerful stress hormone that can be very damaging to the body and brain. Coffee restricts blood vessels and raises blood pressure nearly twenty points on the diastolic reading. Athletes that expect peak performance should scrutinize this information. Studies also show that excess cortisol produced from caffeine greatly affect cognitive functions, especially short-term memory areas. The hippocampus in the midbrain region is impaired by the cortisol, which is carried by the blood. Is it any wonder that so many people are experiencing that “senior” moment in the prime of their lives?

Additionally, for every cup of diuretic that is consumed, an additional eight ounces of water must be added to the daily intake. This means that a quarter of the American population who drink 4 or more cups per day of caffeine containing drinks would need to consume over 100 ounces of water a day to hydrate themselves properly. This however is not the case and the symptoms of dehydration are the result.

There is a misconception that too much water stresses the kidneys. However, water-soluble toxins must leave the kidneys, not through the bowels especially when constipated. When there is not enough water to flush the kidneys, the body tries to rid the toxins through the skin, thus amplifying the problems of acne and eczema. The solution is obvious; drink more water and many problems will disappear. Drink water until it becomes a habit. It helps curb the appetite, helps weight loss, leads to more efficient fat burning, ensures adequate blood volume and removes wastes from the body. It also reduces the risk of kidney stones by diluting salts that can form crystals. By increasing urine production, the body is able to efficiently remove dangerous wastes. It also can help raise pH levels especially when coral calcium or lemon juice is added to the water.

There is some controversy over which type of water one should drink, distilled or mineral water. Distilled water is preferred when fasting because it helps remove unwanted toxins. However, studies have shown that regular consumption of distilled water can leach good minerals from the body. Distilled water is a soft water and it is very aggressive. It actively pulls carbon dioxide from the air and it becomes very acidic, thus lowering pH levels. It is best to drink spring water that has been filtered by reverse osmosis. The pH level of this water does not remove valuable minerals from the body.

Water is very important as a shock absorber for the joints. If hydration of the body does not stay at proper levels, then the synthesis of synovial fluid for the joints is impaired

 

Water, The Healing Nutrient

 

Water has the ability to heal the inside of the body and applied externally can work miracles. When water becomes ice it is used to reduce the swelling of injuries. When water is hot it is helpful in whirlpool treatments to loosen muscles. When it becomes steam, it can be very beneficial to sinuses and the skin. When chronic injuries do not respond to treatment one of the best therapies is to apply hot and cold treatments. For example, when the lower back is injured healing can be expedited by using hot and cold therapy in the shower. The method is to apply extremely hot water to the lower back for three minutes then turn the temperature of the water to its coldest setting. With the water on cold, apply for three minutes. This seems rather harsh, however the hot water makes the cold seem less intense. Only after this condition is diminished does the effect of the cold water become unpleasant. By this time, the hot water is ready to be applied again. Now an even hotter temperature can be tolerated. Be careful not to scald yourself with this heat setting. Again, apply for three minutes. Now the cold water is ready to be turned on again. This time the effect of the cold water does not seem to be as dramatic as the first application. Keep cold setting for three minutes and return for the final hot treatment. Once this is accomplished, this part of the treatment is over. The next step is to wrap yourself in a towel and then a bathrobe and lie flat (back) on the bed for twenty minutes. The sense of lower back pain is greatly diminished after this treatment.

What is actually happening during this treatment is that the extreme temperature changes of the water are flushing blood in and out of the injury site. This is helping accelerate the healing process by flushing blood cells (hot water) that carry nutrients and proteins into the injured area. When the cold water is applied damaged cells and wastes products are removed from this area. By alternating from hot to cold the process of rebuilding and removal of damaged tissue is accomplished. If this is done twice daily (morning and evening), it can dramatically increase healing. Otherwise, the body will take it time and the older the person is the slower the healing will be.

This hot and cold therapy is both a natural and an artificial way of tricking the body into healing itself. This methodology can be applied to many other area of the body as well. It is especially affective on area such as the feet or the wrists, where the injured limb can be immersed in a bucket of water. It is especially helpful for serious sprains. It is also helpful in cases of tendonitis. However, if there is a problem of chronic tendonitis it may because of a state of acidosis. In this case, it is important to raise the pH levels in the body in order for healing to take place.  

For ankle, wrist and even elbow injuries, the procedure is as follows. Start with hot water in one bucket and in another bucket have cold water with the addition of ice. This is to be done with the same procedure as with the hot and cold shower. It starts with hot and ends with hot. This knowledge as been successfully used by many sport people. For sports trainers it is common knowledge that by applying the hot and cold treatments to athletes that their return to the playing field is accelerated. If the injury site can not have water directly applied, the next option is to use hot and cold compresses. These treatments are not as effective but they still provide a benefit.

Sugar

What is sugar? Sugar comes from refining sugar cane and beets, a process that involves many chemicals, synthetic chemicals along with charcoal. This refined product called sugar contains no nutrients, vitamins, or minerals. Refined white sugar is just a simple carbohydrate not a complex carbohydrate such as the original sugar cane and beets were. Sugar as a simple carbohydrate is an artificial devitalized by-product of the original plant. Complex carbohydrates are whole foods with vitamins, minerals, and enzymes, meaning that they are complete foods. As complex carbohydrates are broken down in our system, they become a good usable glucose molecule. Conversely simple carbohydrates ferment in the digestive tract because they cannot be broken down for the body to use them, the result is acetic acid, alcohol, carbon dioxide, and an increase of blood glucose by an unregulated, unnatural and damaging amount.

Salt

Chapter 15

Table salt is considered by many as a poison when over used and a major contributor to high blood pressure. Many manufacturers add aluminum-based flowing agents to help make table salt pour more easily. Aluminum is a brain toxin and has been associated with Alzheimer’s disease. You must use salt but use only sea salt and only use sea salt as a colon wash with warm water.

A healthy, active lifestyle demands sufficient salt intake.  Human life is dependent on the presence of sodium.

Current scientific research reveals that there are actually very few salt-related health problems. A healthy, active lifestyle demands a sufficient reasonable salt intake. The contention that our body can function on no salt at all or on a restricted ration of salt causes more problems than it is intended to solve!

Sodium, in the form of sodium chloride, plays an important roll in the primary processes of digestion and absorption.  Salt activates the first enzyme in the mouth, salivary amylase. Sodium chloride is used to make hydrochloric acid, a secretion needed for digestion.  Sodium needs other minerals, such as magnesium, calcium, and potassium, in order to function properly in the body. Because it lacks these minerals, refined, iodized salt does not operate in the body in the same way that sea salt does.

Life is closely dependent upon the presence of sodium. However, to clearly understand the role of sodium in blood, we must examine it in combination with water and various ions: chlorine, potassium, calcium, hydrogen, etc. That is why it is more important to study the co-activity of sodium with these other ions, rather than the sodium element alone.

Nature's Wonderful Medicine

Lonny J. Brown, PhD considered by many to be an expert on garlic writes chances are if you were to see an ad for a "wonder drug" that claimed to unclog arteries, reduce high blood pressure, kill intestinal parasites, strengthen muscles, boost hormone secretion, and which was loaded with vitamins and minerals, you'd be pretty skeptical. If this super-product also purported to prevent blood clots, cleanse the kidneys, control epilepsy and ward off cancer, you'd probably call the Office of Consumer Protection to report blatant advertising fraud. Yet such a product is available, and it's legal, cheap, requires no prescription, and has been proven safe and effective for thousands of years. It's garlic.

 

4000 Years of Folklore

Garlic -- the pungent, magical "stink bulb" according to Brown was used as a healing herb in ancient civilizations from China and Japan to northern Europe. The Greeks used it as a laxative, diuretic, and poison antidote. Roman soldiers relied on the potent root for muscular conditioning. And gypsies wore it around their necks to ward off the plague. In Russia, its antibiotic properties earned it the label, "Russian penicillin."

 

On this continent, garlic was used to fight smallpox in colonial New England. And American family doctors treated asthma, whooping cough, typhus and cholera with it until early in this century. During World Wars I and II, garlic was pressed into service as a battle wound dressing when medical supplies ran out. Today, the "stinking rose" is on the verge of achieving legitimate medical status as research groups investigate its legendary curative properties -- not the least of which is garlic's amazing ability to prevent heart disease, this nation's No. 1 killer.

 

New Old Remedy

A study in India among 432 coronary patients who had already suffered one heart attack reported that those who took garlic supplements suffered fewer additional attacks and had lower blood pressure and serum cholesterol levels. After three years, nearly twice as many patients had died in the group not taking garlic. Remarkably, garlic reduces only the harmful LDL cholesterol and leaves the protective HDL cholesterol.

 

After studies in China and Italy demonstrated the venerable kitchen spice's ability to prevent stomach cancer, the National Cancer Institute recently begin its own investigation of garlic's medicinal properties. Early indications are that this folk medicine works as claimed.

 

The New York Times reported (1990) that the odorous herb "has been shown in laboratory studies, and in some cases in patients, to suppress the formation and growth of cancer cells and to counter blood conditions that foster arteriosclerosis, heart attacks and strokes.” And experiments with laboratory animals at Penn State University and at the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston show that "garlic compounds can block action of carcinogens that can cause cancers of the breast, esophagus, colon and rectum.” There is also evidence that garlic prevents cell damage caused by heavy metal pollutants, radiation and aging.

 

Active Ingredients

Garlic is a perennial member of the lily family, and its cousins, the onions and scallions, are also known for their longevity-promoting properties. Scientists have only recently concluded that garlic's enhanced powers derive from its unusually high concentration (25 percent) of the volatile oil, allicin. It seems that allicin just may qualify as nature's strongest antibiotic. In the digestive tract, garlic has the uncanny ability to destroy only the undesirable bacteria, and not attack the system's normal, beneficial intestinal flora. It is also an excellent source of vitamins B-1 and C, plus calcium, magnesium, iron, potassium, phosphorus, zinc, and the vital anti-cancer trace mineral, selenium.

 

Aside from its common form as a culinary condiment, garlic has been extracted in capsules as a vitamin supplement; used as a tonic for killing intestinal parasites; as a gargle for sore throats; as a sterilizing wound dressing; as an insecticide spray (it repels cabbage moths, aphids and Japanese beetles); as a poultice for insect bites; and in suppository form for vaginal yeast infections.

 

Garlic's active ingredients can be absorbed through the skin, making it an effective chest rub (combined with olive oil and lanolin) for colds and flu. Even its fumes are effective. Our family uses garlic as a steam inhalant for bronchial infections.

 

One caution -- raw or concentrated garlic can burn. Avoid direct contact with mucus membranes and all sensitive areas, such as eyes, sinuses, and vaginal tissue. As with any strong food, you can overdo garlic. Watch for gas, indigestion and "heartburn." Just as you would after a round of prescribed antibiotics, you can re-establish a balanced intestinal eco-system with cultured yogurt, kifir, and miso (fermented soy paste). As always, moderation is advised.

 

As for garlic's famous drawback -- bad breath -- nature in her wisdom has provided the antidote in another readily available garden herb, parsley, which has chlorophyll and enzymes that neutralize garlic's strong odor. Chew a few leaves after lunch or dinner. Or avoid the problem altogether with deodorized garlic extract capsules from the health food store.

 

But if you're going on vacation, Brown recommends packing a fresh whole clove of garlic in your first-aid kit. It will keep the box sterile, and be available for cuts, stings, colds, or that special campfire dish.

The Spark Of Life

God said, “Let there be light!

Somatids: What are they? The beginning of life. They come from light! Somatids are also referred to as colloids of life. Colloids of light beget the colloids of life.

Somatids are the tiniest of all living things. Nothing can live with out them. All life starts and ends with them. Human Cells cannot divide with out them. They swim in our blood and can cross though the membrane of the red blood cell. During their evolution they become a thousand headed monster. Its believed they are pleomorphic. They may be the only living structure that no Mother or Father is necessary for procreation. Like the protozoa which science cannot explain its origin, the somatids also represents one of the greatest mysteries of microbiology. The bridge between the physical realm and the spiritual realm, is were the origin of the somatids begin. To many this may sound like mumbo-jumbo, however God in His great mystery can also not be explained. The way western medicine is practiced today was influenced by a theory excepted over one hundred years ago. That theory was postulated by Louis Pasteur and is called “the germ theory” or “monomorphism”. At the same time another theory was rejected by the establishment this was called “pleomorphism”.  A French scientist, Prof. Antoine Bechemp proposed that the biological terrain of the human body is the most important factor for maintaining health. His theory promoted that mutations evolve within the blood which cause disease.  He developed a crude microscope which he discovered a small life force in the blood. This spark of life he called the “microzyma”. Bechamp realized that blood is life (Leviticus). Bechamp was not from a family of influence or had the personality to win over the medical establishment thus the more flamboyant Pasteur won a victory that directed the course of western medicine.

Today pharmaceutical companies and the American Medical association control medicine. Their goal is to develop and patent a drug for every ailment and disease. They are also developing expensive countless surgical procedures and other dangerous radiation and chemical methods. Granted, there are phenomenal results from the advancements in drug research and development. Many people believe that many lives have been extended and greatly enhanced by modern western medicine. Now however, with the proliferation of knowledge, advancements in microbiology and successful alternative medicinal treatments, the theory of pleomorphism must be revisited.

Pleomorphism cannot be refuted with the invention of the somatoscope by maverick biologist Gaeston Naessens. Naessens was born in France and exhibited the signs of genius at an early age as his credentials will indicate. Naessens was intrigued by the work Becamp and Becamp’s student Guenther Enderlein. In the twenties Enderlein proposed that diets rich in animal products refined foods up-set normal pH balance. He also study blood and found the same spark of life that Bechamp saw. Enderlein called this colloid of life the protit. Enderleins experimentations proved that a drop in pH causes cells to switch from normal respiration to fermentation. Enderlein also proposed that disease was the result of a mutation, which comes from the simple protit forms he also witnessed in the blood.

Gaeston Naessens’ somatoscope is a very powerful microscope that allows for the study of live blood. A background in electronics enabled Naessens to utilize a different light to create a powerful viewing instrument. His microscope uses UV light and in layman’s terms he is able to split the light and reconfigure it so as to produce a light and methodology as to magnify up to 30,000 X. He figured how to split the UV light by a magnetic coil, which in turn creates parallel rays. The light is then passed through a Kerr cell, which in turn increases the frequency of the ray before being injected on to the specimen. This special UV light stimulates the biological material in the somatoscope so that the specimens in the blood give off their own light. This is called dark field microscopy.

The spark of life that his processors witnessed now was in high resolution and clearly delineated. Nissans discovered that the blood of every healthy mammal contains three basic forms called protits or somatids. Now Naessens was able to map out the mutations that his predecessors had theorized about. Naessens proposed that proper cell division occurs in the presence of the three basic somatids. When the body’s biological terrain changes then the somatids expand their three basic forms to higher pathogenic states. It is the mutation or evolution of the three basic somatids that now interfere with cell activity and the immune system.

Naessens identified the 16 stages or macro cycle that somatids go through when the biological terrain is out of homeostasis. Naessens years of clinical experience demonstrated that in healthy people there is a strong gate control to keep the somatidian cycle from expanding out of the normal three cycle. Naessens observed with his somatoscope witnessed that it takes 90 hours for the macrocycle to be completed. Naessens used time-lapse photography to capture the shape of the three normal somatids and the 13 other pathogenic forms.

In the book, “Politics in Healing” by Dan Haley, he outlines the findings of Nissans’ work. Naessens described the somatids as the following, 1) basic somatids , 2) spores, 3) double spores, then Naessens observed the beginning of the macrocycle at work. 4)bacteria, 5) double bacteria, 6)little rods, 7)double spore bacteria, 8)granulated double spore bacteria, 9),10) mycrobactia with bubbles, 11)a bursting phase,12) yeast phase, 13)ascospores, 14)asci, 15)filamentous thalli, 16)bursting phase of new somatids. According to Naessens each advancing form of life evolved from the previous one.

Naessens has been able to culture the normal somatid cycle and by creating adverse conditions has seen the complete 16-stage cycle. Nissans has theorized that when the immune system is weakened by exposure to chemical pollution, radiation, electrical fields, poor nutrition, depression, shock, broken bones, or accidents, the gate is opened for the advance stages of the somatids. Essentially the sicker the patient the greater the macrocycle of somatids are visible in live blood specimen. When patients become healthy again somatids revert back to their first three stages.

This in itself is of tremendous importance for people that believe in the body’s ability to heal itself of an array of diseases. Imagine the potential for screening diseases by live blood analysis by dark field microscopy. This is the preventive medicine that Thomas Edison prophesized would be the practice of the Doctors of the future. Naessens work is repeatable and it has the capacity to pre-diagnose conditions in advance before they clinically appear.

Of course his work is provable biology and thus has put Naessens and others at odds with the medical establishment of today. That is mired in the dogma of the germ theory. The ability to culture somatids and to associate the health

Of a patient with their somatid cycle is the paradigm shift to the new biology. Like Bechamp, Enderlein, Warburg, and others before, Naessens unequivocally states, “germs are not the cause but the result of disease”.

The germ theory is perfect for the perpetual motion machine of modern medicine. Cancer, and other degenerative diseases are the culprits, the invisible foes that are relentlessly chased. The search occurs in costly research labs, universities, hospitals and drug factories. The fact that these foes can never be captured, guarantees a vicious cycle of funding and profits for the drug and chemical corporations and untold pain and suffering for the masses that are programmed by the well oiled medical machine.

People like Naessens, Stanley Burroughs, Royal Rife, Bechamp, Enderlein, and Warburg have opened Pandora’s box.  Mans intrinsic nature to use reason, logic, intuition, imagination and other types of creative thinking has always lead to the truth. In this twenty first century this paradigm shift in biology will become the new dogma of the 21-century.

Naessens discovered a new vision of life. His work called “Somatidian Orthobiology” was presented in 1963 to little interest. The reason was and still is today because of prejudice. When a maverick such as Naessens, provides the world with a new spin on the old dogma, the whole establishment is threatened. “How could it be that simple?” they ask. “No it’s a trick. Lets dismantle that machine before a revolution gets out of hand”.

Is there any difference between Naessens theories being rejected by today’s medical establishment and the way Galileo was treated for his invention of the telescope? We don’t think so. All Galileo received for his brilliance was persecution and house arrest and being labeled a heretic. As he shared the truth his ideas where said to be the work of the devil by the men of the cloth. They were supposedly well intentioned, but in fact were wrong. Just as today’s people of modern medicine ignore the obvious findings of contemporary geniuses. They instead continue to promote that blood is sterile, the germ theory, the single cell cancer theory and the blood clot and obstruction theory of coronary heart disease. HOW THEY WORK: A lot of people think vitamins can replace food. They cannot. In fact, vitamins cannot be assimilated without ingesting food. That is why we suggest taking them with a meal. VITAMIN C (Ascorbic Acid)

It is also one of the major antioxidant nutrients and a cofactor for many enzymes. Vitamin C. participates in the important activation or production of vital body chemicals, like norepinephrine, which is needed for the ‘fight or flight’ response, the unconscious raising of your pulse rate, blood flow to your muscles, blood pressure elevation, and the heightened sense of readiness that we experience when danger threatens. It has two other important roles as a detoxifier, it cleanse your body of toxins. In this capacity, it functions as a molecule designed to protect your body, its essential fats, and the fat-soluble vitamins, especially A and E from the damaging effects of oxygen. A little lemon juice will prevent browning of other fruits and vegetables when exposed to the air, which is a result of free radical damaging. It enhances the absorption of iron from the intestinal tract by chelating it. It prevents the conversion of nitrates (from tobacco smoke, smog, bacon, lunch meats, & some vegetables) into cancer-causing substances. According to Dr. Lines Pauling, the foremost authority on Vitamin C, Vitamin C will decrease the risk of getting certain cancers by 75%. Vitamin C. is also abundant in lemons, limes and other citrus fruits and most berries like strawberries and blueberries. Most melons, and some, vegetables such as tomatoes, peppers, broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, leafy greens such as spinach, turnips, mustard greens and some other vegetables. For diabetic’s it is even more critical in maintaining good health. Ascorbic acid also combats free radicals, through potent antioxidant protection. With the constant assault on tissues that high blood sugar causes, it strengthens the integrity of small blood vessels and this is where much of the damage of diabetes occurs. It also improves carbohydrate tolerance, and reduces the bad cholesterol and triglycerides. Diabetics suffer a defect in metabolizing ascorbic acid that can lead to breakdown products that can damage the linings of blood vessels. You can help prevent this problem by taking vitamin C. along with bioflavinoids.

DEFICIENCY SYMPTOMS: May lead to soft & bleeding gums, swollen or painful joints, slow-healing wounds & fractures, bruising, nosebleeds, tooth decay, loss of appetite, muscular weakness, skin hemorrhages, capillary weakness, anemia, impaired digestion. Large doses of vitamin C. can cause a B 12 deficiency. But is most often tolerated even in high doses. Another symptom of taking to much vitamin C. is diarrhea. The amount taken daily those well cause loose stools varies from person to person. And even individually bowel tolerance varies. You can tolerate more vitamin C. in states of stress or disease as your body’s demand for the vitamin increases. Hemolysis sufferers should only take increased amounts of vitamin C. under careful physician supervision.

 

 

VITAMIN E

IMPORTANCE: Major anti-oxidant nutrient one of the best defenders of our bodies from free radical damage; retards cellular aging due to oxidation; supplies oxygen to the blood which is then carried to the heart and other organs; thus alleviating fatigue; aids in bringing nourishment to cells; strengthens the capillary walls & prevents the red blood cells from destructive poisons; prevents & dissolves blood clots; prevents the oxidation of low-density lipoprotein, the ‘bad’ cholesterol and triglycerides another bad blood fat, that leads to arterial plaque plugging up our arteries, making us candidates for heart attack. Minerals that occur in tiny amounts or traces. They play a major role in health, since even minute portions of them can powerfully affect health. They are essential in the assimilation and utilization of vitamins and other nutrients. They aid in digestion and provide the catalyst for many hormones, enzymes and essential body functions and reactions. they also aid in replacing electrolytes lost through heavy perspiration or extended diarrhea and protects against toxic reaction and heavy metal poisoning.

MAGNESIUM

IMPORTANCE: Plays an important role in regulating the neuromuscular activity of the heart; maintains normal heart rhythm; necessary for proper calcium & Vitamin C metabolism; converts blood sugar into energy.

DEFICIENCY SYMPTOMS: May result in calcium depletion, heart spasms, nervousness, muscular excitability, confusion; kidney stones. Magnesium is necessary for life and can protect the kidney from disease but if kidney damage has already occurred magnesium supplementation could be harmful, even life threatening.

The current RDA, 350 mg. per day, is considered to be sufficient but there is mounting evidence that this figure is lower than optimal intake and that this low level of

Magnesium has been consistently depleted in our soils. Water from deep wells supplies additional magnesium not found in food, but surface water, our common source of supply, lacks magnesium. Food processing removes magnesium. Broiling, steaming and boiling remove magnesium into the water or drippings. High carbohydrate and high fat diets increase the need for magnesium, as does physical and mental stress. Diuretic medications and insulin further deplete total body magnesium. As we age magnesium uptake may be impaired. Dieting reduces intake of already low levels of magnesium intake.

There are many conditions and diseases that are clinically tied to magnesium deficiency. Blood tests for magnesium deficiency are irrelevant and unusable. These levels do not reflect total body magnesium (TBM). Magnesium levels of bone and intracellular levels of magnesium are what tell the true status of TBM.

Magnesium is a critical element in 325+ biochemical reactions in the human body.

Recent research, in France and several other European countries, gives a clue concerning the role of magnesium plays in the transmission of hormones (such as insulin, thyroid, estrogen, testosterone, DHEA, etc.), neurotransmitters (such as dopamine, catecholamines, serotonin, GABA, etc.), and minerals and mineral electrolytes.
