Until mid-May, visitors to MacKerricher State Park will encounter a barrier cable and signs east of the harbor seal rookery north of the main MacKerricher Beach during the pupping season. The barrier and signs were installed by MacKerricher and Marine Mammal Center volunteers. Because seals give birth on an open beach, the newborn pups are extremely sensitive to intrusion by people and dogs. No dogs are allowed in the vicinity of the rookery.   Full Story

There are over 500 acres on the Little River Airport property, and all of them require some level of vegetation management. According to Tim Scully, Little River Airport Advisory Committee chair, the Federal Aviation Administration "has something to say about all 572 acres of the airport [property]. The property is being studied by a knowledgeable committee of locals who will prepare and present a final vegetation management report to the county in the coming weeks.   Full Story

Mendocino Winegrape Commission is growing
The newly formed Mendocino Winegrape and Wine Commission will be focusing this year on increasing branding and awareness of Mendocino grapes and wine as well as educational opportunities for its members, said Commission President and CEO John Enquist. "These are things we can do now that, as the Mendocino Wine growers Alliance we couldn't do because of no money," Enquist said.

The Daily Journal "Greater Tuna" opens at the Ukiah Playhouse on March 15 and plays through April 7. "Greater Tuna is the hilarious comedy about Texas' third smallest town, where the Lion's Club is too liberal and Patsy Cline never dies. The eclectic citizens that make up this town are portrayed by only two performers, making this satire on life in rural America even more delightful as they depict all of the inhabitants of Tuna -- men, women, children and animals.   ...

Special for the Journal A hop and a jump from Ukiah resides long-suffering and much maligned Clear Lake, one of the most interesting bodies of water in North America, perhaps in the world. Just the fact that Clear Lake has rested in the ample lap of what we now call Lake County for at least a million years is astonishing. Most lakes would have long since succumbed to silt and become a wetlands or a meadow.   ...

Discover, digitize and restore your photographs before it's too late It was a casual conversation between a man and his son-in-law in Dallas months ago that lead to the discovery of unstudied footage of the day that John F. Kennedy, Jr. was assassinated. Amateur photographer George Jefferies casually mentioned that he was in Dallas on the day JFK was shot and that he had recorded 8mm footage of the parade which took place over 40 years ago.

Cash cow California might get some money back The next Gold Rush is on. All across America, as politicians head into the setup year for the 2008 presidential election, candidates are singing "California, Here I Come," and jumping aboard airplanes headed for the Golden State. As always, this state is the cash cow of American politics. It's not just presidential hopefuls who extract wads of money out of Californians, but candidates for the House and Senate, too.

Looking for whales in Mendocino

Two gray whales played just offshore on Saturday, oblivious to the distant blur of a crowd of two dozen tourists on the Mendocino Headlands. The pair spouted two silvery streams, arched flukes gracefully out of the water and dove for a mouthful of marine-life enriched mud. "I saw a fluke," said a distant voice on shore, from the Ford House tour group.   Full Story

Westport's whale disappears

Upon visiting the now familiar site where a dead fin whale washed ashore near Chadbourne Gulch over two weeks ago, many were probably surprised to find it is no longer there Tuesday. Westport Village Society volunteer Jenny Shattuck reported Tuesday afternoon that high overnight tides took the whale carcass back out to sea.   Full Story

Stem Cells – What are they?

The state Department of Toxic Substances Control has issued a site investigation and remediation order to Georgia Pacific Corporation, giving it an array of deadlines to perform a multitude of tasks. Sent Feb. 16, the order was issued because the department determined cleanup is necessary due to "threatened or existing releases of hazardous substances." The order establishes a schedule for the site's cleanup and for measures to prevent the release or spread of hazardous materials. On Jan.   Full Story

Dead fin whale washes ashore near Westport

The carcass of a 60-foot-long female fin whale that has washed ashore just north of Chadbourne Gulch will be left to decompose naturally, according to State Fish and Game, and National Marine Fisheries Service officials. However, that may not be able to happen if destructive acts by humans continue. Reports began coming in to the newspaper Thursday, Feb. 8, estimating the creature to be anywhere from 50 to 75 feet in length.   Full Story Comment?

The mother of the man accused of making a bomb threat that closed down the county courthouse made an impassioned public plea for better services for people who have a "dual diagnosis." Local Restaurants Boycott Canadian Fish

Wine being aged in Mendocino Redwood kegs

There is more Mendocino than just a romantic weekend.  Sure we're known for our upscale bed and breakfasts and fine dinning, and wines, but with our year-round events, live theater performances, and popular music venues we have something for just about everyone.

Getting there is half the fun: Mendocino is a four- to six-hour drive to the north from San Francisco, depending on traffic. Take Highway 101 to Cloverdale. Then pick up Highway 128 to the northwest.

Where to stay:

The village of Mendocino has many bed-and-breakfast inns in historic houses, as well as the Mendocino Hotel. Larger inns and lodgings are outside of the Historic Preservation District; you can find those accommodations to the south and also north to Fort Bragg.

Stevenswood Lodge offers a change of pace with modern architecture, understated blond wood furniture and a wooded setting south of town. Accommodations, numbering 10, run from standard rooms to spacious suites. Room rates begin at $125 and include a full breakfast. (800) 421-2810, www.stevenswood.com.

Joshua Grindle Inn, the only four-star lodging in the village, has 10 rooms. Five are in the main house and the remainder in cottages and the water tower. Excellence lies in the details -- delicious cookies when you're hungry, a little plastic bag so you can take home the Swiss-milled soap. December packages include shop coupons and wrapping supplies. Rates begin at $139 with full breakfast. (800) GRINDLE, (707) 937-4143, www.joshgrin.com.

At Agate Cove Inn, the cottages bear the names of jewels -- Emerald, Topaz, Jasper, Garnet and Moonstone. It's situated on a bluff above Agate Cove just north of the historic district. Two rooms are in an 1860 farmhouse and the others are single or duplex cottages. A full country breakfast is served each morning, and may be cooked on a wood-burning Belleville stove. Most rooms have fireplaces and spectacular ocean views. Rates begin at $139 with full breakfast. (800) 527-3111, www.agatecove.com.

Sea Rock Bed & Breakfast Inn has binoculars and a telescope at the breakfast room windows, the better to view the whales that might be passing in the ocean beyond the cliff. Come sunset, guests can watch the spectacle from their decks and then snuggle up beside the fireplace in each room. Most unusual are the sculptural log footrests made by innkeeper Andy Plocher. Rates begin at $179, with discounts when booking online. (800) 906-0926, www.searock.com.

The MacCallum House Inn is the yellow Victorian with a blue widow's walk perched on a rise just behind Main Street. It's by far Mendocino's most elaborate Victorian. It's also more than meets the eye. The inn includes cottages, a barn and water tower rooms, as well as a complex of suites and some cottages off property. Room rates begin at $135 and include breakfast. (800) 609-0492, www.maccallumhouse.com.

The Little River Inn, in the hamlet of Little River just south of Mendocino, is one of the area's oldest accommodations. It started in 1939 in Cora Coombs' family Victorian farmhouse that was built in the 1850s. Owned by her descendants, it boasts 67 rooms in nine buildings, a golf course, tennis courts and a day spa. Rooms vary considerably from small farmhouse rooms to luxury suites. Rates begin at $110. (888) 466-5683, www.littleriverinn.com.

Where to eat:

Stevenswood's restaurant rates high as a local dining destination. Award-winning chef Ira Mittleman conjures up culinary treats. At dinner the local steelhead arrives in an aquavit-cured gravlax tart, nestled on caramelized onion rings alongside wafer-sliced cucumber discs. A Mozzarella-prosciutto roulade joins heirloom tomatoes in a balsamic reduction for another taste-tingling first course. Bouillabaisse features a brimming soup bowl of scallops, shrimp, mussels, clams, and lobster claw in a Pernod-infused tomato fumй. The osso bucco of lamb order brings a huge crusty shank with rosemary-scented bread pudding and oven-roasted vegetables."

"The desserts dazzle. Be sure and try Ira's world famous KeyLime Pie. A martini glass brims with zabaglione and summer berries and a lemon tuille shatters with each biteful. And if you have a passion for home-made ice cream and sorbet, out comes a platter-size serving with six scoops of intense flavors-strawberry, plaintain, black walnut, espresso, fig/blueberry, and mint granite. California wines by the glass and the bottle compose a fine spectrum. The award winning wine list offers a perfect pairing to the selection of fine foods."
lacquered Alaskan halibut with an Asian noodle cake and a memorable duck prepared two ways with Black Mission fig glaze. (800) 421-2810. www.stevenswood.com.

Cafe Beaujolais, Mendocino's most famous restaurant, is closed for a winter break until Feb. 6.

We had dinner at Moosse Café, where a bowl of roasted eggplant soup and a cured pork chop warmed us to the core on a cold night. It's on the ground floor of the Blue Heron Inn in a room of Zen-like simplicity. (707) 937-4323, www.theblueheron.com.

The first floor of MacCallum House houses the well-known Grey Whale Bar & Café, where the ingredient-driven cuisine changes seasonally and is identified by the grower or producer on the menu. The olive oil tasting on the appetizer list will please foodies. (800) 609-0492.

At the Little River Inn, the restaurant offers Dungeness crab in cakes or in sauce over linguine, as well as other perennial favorites, such as Caesar salad and roasted double-cut pork chops. (888) 466-5683.
