A landmark exhibition of the work of Oswaldo Guayasamin, “Rage and Redemption,” opens at the Museum of Latin American Art in Long Beach on April 18 with a panel discussion scheduled at 2 pm featuring Joseph Mella, Director of Vanderbilt University Fine Arts Gallery and exhibition curator, Pablo Guayasamin, son of the artist and Carlos A. Jauregui, catalogue essayist and Professor of Literature at Vanderbilt University.

The retrospective exhibition highlights Guayasamin’s 60-year career, including work from his early period reflecting the plight of the indigenous peoples of the Andes as well as his later work portraying the human struggle for justice and anti-war themes.  Guayasamin became Ecuador’s official painter in the 1940’s and was honored at the Ninth Meeting of Latin American Presidents in 1999 as ‘the painter of Latin America’ for his signature style, ‘indigenismo,’ defined by powerfully exaggerated proportions and charged with a range of dramatic human emotions. The exhibition runs from April 18 to August 16, 2009.

Always a thrill is the MOLA Spring Gala fundraiser set for the evening of April 25.  The theme event, ‘Experience the Passion,’ showcases Latin American art and culture, including authentic Latin American cocktails, a seated dinner menu of Latin American culinary delights, a sensational fashion show, live music and a silent auction. Lexus sponsors the event along with donors who reserve tables at $5,000, $10,000 and $25,000.   Individual tickets are also available for this gala event. Please contact Wendy Celaya at (562) 216-4137.
