Orange County sheriff, indicted on corruption charges, is ordered to surrender his passport. A federal magistrate sets bail at $20,000 each for the lawman and his wife, and $10,000 for his mistress.
Sheriff Mike Carona and his wife Debbie, both in handcuffs, were ordered to pay $20,000 bail and will be released later today from federal lockup.
During the proceeding Carona kept his head high and his jaw square, and very respectfully said responded, “Yes sir,” in response to each of the judge’s four questions.
Federal prosecutor Brett Sagel argued that Carona should surrender his firearm because he’s under federal indictment. Carona’s attorney, Dean Steward, argued that Carona’s life has been threatened on numerous occasions and he needs his weapon.
Judge Robert Block disagreed with the government and said Carona can keep his firearm.
Carona’s former mistress, Debra Hoffman sat directly behind Sheriff Carona with her federal public defender. She too was handcuffed. She too respectfully answered the judge and she was ordered to post $10,000 bond.
They will all be back in court on Monday to face arraignment
