The White House experience with Glori Fickling

What’s to say about a restaurant which has been around and thriving since 1918?  We’re talking 91 phenomenal years commencing when motion picture luminaries of the twenties made Laguna Beach a favorite getaway from the pressures of glamorous Hollywood. Under astute direction of principal George Catsouras, who acquired the historic venue on April 1, 1981, the popular White House in downtown Laguna Beach has established a respected reputation for consistently good American cooking, reasonable prices, nightly entertainment, and a bustling bar which keeps the local cocktail contingent constantly coming.

Alfresco seating looking out to Coast Highway leads into a sizeable lounge beyond which a bandstand engages live music inviting dance enthusiasts to kick up their heels nightly on the spacious floor. A separate entrance beckons to lunch. dinner and weekend brunch in an adjoining dining room cozy with cushy booths and free standing tables. Service is home town friendly and the menu covers a well diversified gamut.  A basket of crusty bread and spreadable butter welcomes guests while awaiting one of mixologist Johnny‘s perfect, poured to the hilt martinis. Prefacing dinner with a crisp Caesar salad, the appetizer size at $7.95 proved generous enough to share though somewhat lacking an anchovy twist.

As pork is my favorite meat, the $18.95 tab was further appealing and my request for angel hair pasta in lieu of the potato choice included was especially pleasing as the kitchen happily complied. Seasoned with tasty apple chutney bordelaise, the chops were very flavorful but sadly well done, and though our charming server, Emily, quickly offered to correct to error I settled on same along with the zesty parmesan strewn pasta and delicious bouquet of fresh, colorful green and root vegetables. Plaudits galore for the mushroom/artichoke smothered chicken breast beautifully charbroiled in a creamy red wine reduction sided with those flavorsome vegetables and luscious mashed potatoes. Supremely sensual tiramisu tops the endless dessert menu, culminating a delightful evening experience with a longtime good friend.
